Social influence refers to changes in an individual's thoughts, feelings, attitudes, or behaviors resulting from interaction with others, and social networks play a crucial role in shaping both individual behavior and macro-level phenomena. The Medical Innovation Study by Coleman et al. demonstrated that doctors who had more friends among their colleagues were more likely to adopt new medical treatments (like tetracycline) earlier than those with fewer connections, showing how network position affects individual behavior. The Cultural Market Study by Watts and Dodds revealed that social influence at the micro level leads to two macro-level phenomena: inequality (through the Matthew effect, where those who are already successful become even more successful) and unpredictability (where success in cultural markets becomes difficult to predict because small random differences can be amplified through social influence dynamics). These studies illustrate how social networks create emergent properties that cannot be predicted by examining individuals in isolation.
