The enteric nervous system is a complex network of approximately 100 million neurons lining the entire digestive tract from esophagus to anus, forming two plexuses that control peristalsis (movement of food through the tract) and secretion (regulating fecal consistency). This system operates automatically without conscious control, making it the most automatic component of the autonomic nervous system. It communicates bidirectionally with the central nervous system, with information flowing from the gut to the brain about satiety, hunger, and GI state, and from the brain to the gut via parasympathetic and sympathetic pathways.
