Cities have historically been shaped by food systems, with ancient cities like Rome and medieval London developing around food distribution networks; however, modern transportation technologies have disconnected cities from their food sources, creating unsustainable systems where food is produced far away, transported long distances, and consumed anonymously, whereas rethinking urban design around food—what Steel calls 'Sitopia'—could reconnect cities with nature and create more sustainable, community-centered food systems.
