Medical evidence and autopsy reports are critical in determining the cause of death in child abuse cases, as injuries consistent with being dropped from a building rather than falling down stairs indicate intentional harm.
Interrogation Psychology: Analyzing a Felony Murder Suspect
Added:okay this is a little strange and I'm going to move this I'm like oh we're just sitting around here do you mind stand up I don't want to sorry this is a little bizarre oh why someone hit that in the middle you put simply police have a home field advantage by requesting suspects to undergo the interview process at the station the interview rooms have been specifically designed to put the suspect into a particular psychological state you can see that this room adheres to Modern interrogation design by the layout alone the interviewer or interrogator's chair should be on casters to allow him to move into or out of the suspect's space when he wants to the chair should be higher than the suspect's chair because height gives a psychological perception of superiority Sergeant Mason wanted the suspect to be pushed up against the wall so it's the creative feeling of restricted movement um listening do you remember me no maybe not a trick question myself and uh Bill were the guys to talk to you last time probably the interview to which sergeant Mason is referring occurred immediately after the incident the incident in question is the paramedics being called when a 10 month old boy in the care of our suspect Bryant Roland began having seizures the paramedics were accompanied by the police who asked Bryant what had happened Brian's answer at the time was that the baby's older brother had pushed the baby down the stairs according to Bryant he heard a thump in the other room while he was cooking baked meat and pan-fried canned corn in the kitchen yeah you heard that right the baby lay conscious but unmoving and Bryant reacted by calling the mother who according to Bryant said not to worry about it the paramedics were called once Brian's wife had returned home to find the baby undergoing a seizure the baby was taken to the hospital and Bryant gave his report to the police explaining that he knew the boy was pushed down the stairs by the older brother because his own son had witnessed the event reporting the incident to Bryant this was two months ago and the baby had since passed away contradictions among Brian's story and the stories of the other interviewed parties including Bryant's son who had related to the beliefs that he was not a witness to the event but was in an entirely different room at the time prompted the police to question Bryant once again but yeah whenever I didn't remember what it was I can't remember the exact date off the top of my head so um did you get a chance to chat with Billy I don't know did these guys tell you what you care for no they've not just without our reporting and all of a sudden police was there okay what were you reporting at um right there behind the county building we have my probation office okay oh what do you want paper for the um as long as it's all okay was that something that happened since you and I talked the first time I don't remember you being on paper yeah yeah okay all right are you still living in the same house where are you staying at no you can't um okay apartment three okay 15 in the Fox Ridge yeah okay um well I'm sure you got some questions for me as to you know why you're here um I got some questions for you um did they did you get a chance yet to give anything to drink or these two yeah hi I'll be right back in here it's Brian Brian oh Sarah um well that's right that's exactly what I did you get smarter something to drink water okay okay okay don't know all right well sir I'll get your food water this whole we pronounce we're gonna repeat ourselves so what else about going on you've been working anywhere today no there's Gary leaving the county two weeks ago yeah you've been in there for how long almost four months okay on the flonius solves that he said and now you're on probation for it what was it was the deal with that case me and my wife Bryant has a history of domestic assault one witness whom the police questioned stated Bryant is a very violent person I've seen him beat his own kids I was visiting some friends who were having a barbecue Bryant Roland came to the barbecue with two of his children I saw him grab one of the kids by the hair and the other by the arm and drag them to the driveway where he flung them down to the ground it was violent enough to where I felt uncomfortable being there I decided to leave after I saw that at this point Sergeant Mason is probing Bryant for truthfulness regarding his History of Violence I got into an argument we got physical in like I locked up for it all is that's why you're not living over there anymore probably she's still staying there um and Bryce are hurting my damn leg well they got your GPS tether yeah do you gotta pay for that um told me I had to pay nothing yet so now how does that work do you have a thing at your house here you're supposed to not be within x amount of fear no no I got it just the charger at the house just to charge it so they don't you can go wherever there's no um they monitor it over there to um well Basin office I only went out from eight oh over at Haley Street talking yeah yes there's no you can go wherever as far as within your house you want something like that all right guys give me a shot if you need anything else thank you sir you're welcome uh so no no restrictions on where you can or can't go I was just asking him a few what's going on here he said he was at his uh Po's office and they brought him down here okay um so I figured out what uh what do you think going on with what you said these on uh probation and tether GPS tether from a different case Okay the probation thing so yeah um so anyway I know you got some questions for me um in in Bill two um did they said did you remember bill do you remember him from the first time no no okay I guess the voice with me no your face you can't forget my face well I was nice too and I yeah a little bit a little bit there all right well uh you mean green curry you go ahead yeah no go ahead oh like I was saying uh with you being here all right and um the bill I ain't talking to you you got brought your probation officer you went in there what to check in like you normally would is that correct yeah I didn't even go see her I went to go see my Swift and shirt lady today and what's that for um it's a new program that they can did where I got a call every day and drop and take classes and stuff okay we get the ferment type thing is that if you don't mess up with the next amount of time then they get it off your no they don't come off my record but what's the point doing it then make you check in and do all the stuff there's no benefit thank you I was supposed to get off in 18 months before you get off soon okay okay then I go to prison okay oh all right so you're there doing that police come pick you up yeah and no conversation go ahead my probation officer came in and was like um I need you to stand up and do it officer saying I'm like okay well what's going on she's like well I can't tell you but I'm going to see you in the county in like a day or two so that's where I thought I was there to actually put out a violation on me so okay all right all right well we can we can go over that as far as what we have on that um but like I said I have some questions for you grab some questions for me that's why you're here um with that mind obviously you didn't come here on your own free will right you got right down here by the police handcuffs so whenever I talk to someone that's down here uh it comes out against you know what I mean like the first time you came here you walked in this time since someone brought you here I'm an advisor here so you understand that okay you've been read your rights before is that something you're familiar with all right you have the Retro main style anything you say okay no abused against you in a court of law you have the right to talk about a lawyer have him or her present with you before ordering any question if you want a lawyer cannot afford to hire one one will be appointed for representing your public expense do you understand each of these rights that I've explained you yes I do um and you said uh you're living at Fox Ridge you're on Tether you're not working right now that's all correct is there a good phone number to get a hold of you at yeah my favorite phone is down there but I just got the phone so I put all the numbers okay I don't know the numbers right now okay all right well with this in mind you will have to talk to me now answer some questions all right there's some stuff you don't know exactly yes yes okay if there's something you don't know then you don't know you know what I'm saying so it's nothing out of the ordinary here as far as if you don't know something you don't know something I'm not trying to trick you all right um Bill what do you got there well do you know why you're in custody right now okay all I know is she said I have a she putting out a probation well the reason for the probation hold is um there has been an issue a warrant issue for your arrest okay I'm not I've never I've never lied to you in here I don't play that Jazz's not gonna lie to in here either okay but there's been a war issue for your arrest okay her felony murder okay while the camera fails to capture the suspect's facial reaction to the charge of felony homicide we do see a marked difference in his body language up to now Bryant had been rocking his legs left and right in a pacifying gesture however upon hearing the charge Bryant laughs stops rocking stretches his legs out and moves his hand behind the chair he is clearly surprised implying that he was truly unaware of the reason for being interviewed he likely believes that his previous interview with the police had exonerated himself after the initial surprise Bryant pulls his jacket over his torso a defensive posture and returns to his Baseline pacifying gesture you gotta be kidding me so that's why we're here okay there's some there's some questions that you might this is your last opportunity Brian the second interrogator detective stoltzenberg quickly seasoned Bryant a deep stubbornness and attempts to appeal to Brian's ego by Framing this conversation is Bryant's chance to change his Public Image detective stolzenberg aims to convince Brian to revise his story he previously gave the police this detective is most effective when police holds strong evidence and when the suspect has a large ego which are both true in this case to to get your side out there otherwise like you've heard me say this before okay you don't want this Miss boys autopsy and the pictures of his autopsy to to say your side of the story because you're gonna end up being a loser all right something happened that day and I can tell you right now what the doctor said that the amount of injury that Lloyd had and I have that I have all the paperwork right here look at the actual autopsy is being here longer than the actual police report okay and the amount of injury and I had separate interviews with these doctors okay the amount of injury that this boy sustained was astronomical and it didn't and it was it is absolutely impossible that the injury that he obtained sustained in your house that day came from falling down to the 18 BM inch step while Bryant's claims that the baby's injuries stem from falling down the small steps in the hallway medical examiners reject such an explanation in fact according to medical professionals working on this case the baby's head injuries were so severe that they were more consistent with being dropped from the top of a building than they were from being pushed down even an entire flight of stairs and again I told you my story I know it and then it changed I know it and then it changed yeah because I was sitting up here calling me a fucking monster and she did not know I ain't no fucking monster I did nothing well somebody did something and you're like I said I had nine kids in that house in my kitchen cooking for nine kids when he got pushed and I reacted like a parent so that yup I'm not disputing that at all I'm not disputing that part at all here and I got y'all telling me I'm all types of fucking monsters and shit I'm not disputing that that what you did was wrong there at all if he was to fall from a step like that and maybe he did fall from a step like that but a lot more happened before that Brian a lot more and then man I'm not the one that y'all need to be looking at that's all types of shit all on Facebook my wife's sending people sending my wife messaging shit talking about how this girl is poisoning her fucking kids and shit listen um here's the autopsy there's no damn poison in the body here okay that was done that was awesome there's no place yeah and from what CPS is telling my wife they said the autopsy really ain't say shit about me that I did nothing but autopsy the autopsy is a separate a separate report that it doesn't it doesn't prove it doesn't show guilt or doesn't try to steer anything anyway all it does is report facts that it sees okay that's it now like like we told you that night you're probably under a lot of stress at the time you're watching all these damn kids or something to a baby you've done it before I've done what before what have I done like 13 years ago when you were babysitting that your girlfriend's uh child while she was at work you beat the hell out of me I had the pictures I said I don't care about the motherfucking pictures I have witnesses right there in that fucking house that sat up there and Justified it that's why when the detectives talked to me there was nothing else brought up on them because they talked to all the witnesses I didn't do nothing to that child okay she was just mad because I didn't want to fuck with her no more that's all that was and she said up there and live she beat her the same thing she could sit up there and told her people and all her friends that's it but I ain't getting nothing to no fucking kid okay that's fine let's move on to this one then okay now this one's a little more serious because the kid's Dead all right though victim blaming is rarely productive a reasonable person would question why a mother wouldn't trust her children with a man who not only has a history of violence toward both children and women but also has seven children of his own to look after there are laws in place that limit the number of children in a supervisor's care and that's assuming that the supervisor is a professional an amateur babysitter such as Bryant should fall under even stricter standards yes it is I don't want to be sitting here and argue with you I want to sit in here okay you got my story from six months ago yep and that's what happened so something more happened something else happened because the kid the medical report States there's no way he arrived at your house with those injuries it's impossible Brian it's impossible he sustained those injuries after he arrived at your home at 3 pm okay okay well that's what it proved and the prosecutor been had that um autopsy report was what like three almost four months well all of a sudden now because like like CPS set up there and had told me not this new CPA not that Michelle was under control it takes some of the reviews the autopsy wasn't saying nothing then it was coming down to the medical examiners sure and I can't control nothing I can't control how long a report is being reviewed at the processors John and I can't control any of that okay we can only control what we can only control just like you can only control what you can only control and you have a little bit of control right now because I always got control I deal with 17. I mean I mean yeah a little bit of control on your feet here okay for what you trying to send me to prison for something I'm trying to send you to prison the last thing that anybody wants as a detective to do is I send the wrong person to jail it's a absolute yeah worst thing what do I benefit from it nothing what do I benefit nothing nothing to this baby and I didn't do nothing when I'm sitting up here in my kitchen cooking for nine kids when this shit happens I'm not saying it it wasn't it didn't happen right then it it was a series of things that occurred okay all right you didn't happen when he fell off the damn 18 inch stud Brian there's no way around that it did not happen while you're cooking food and he got pushed supposedly pushed by his four-year-old brother didn't happen it's not feasible well I know I didn't touch that baby and I didn't do nothing wrong for that baby and who did it and that's a good question because I didn't do nothing but it happened when he was there okay like I said I had nine kids in that house that day nine of them I'm cooking for nine kids I didn't all the kids that were there containing that that was running around the house no it was seven because I had no so I had my seven there and then plus Jason and his brother it was a total of seven because two years weren't there no yes no one oh no matter of fact there was a total of eight because my oldest son which is 13 he wasn't there but the rest of them was there off of 12 line down yeah um so therefore there wasn't nobody missing but one kid so actually not nine there was eight kids but it's funny the one number doesn't matter but here's the thing the kid arrives he's fine okay man when that kid rock when there was that kid was not fine man that kid what was wrong what was wrong kid was already shaking like he was cold and all this shit we can sit up there and told you that shit during his first interview with the police Bryant claimed to have seen the baby's mother repeatedly slapping the baby's three-year-old older brother when she arrives due to the boy not wanting to come inside to be babysat Bryant implicated the mother to be abusive and that any palpable physical damage to the baby barring the fall down the steps was present prior unbeknownst to Brian the baby was given a clean bill of health only two days earlier having been brought to the hospital for a breathing issue hospital records confirm no physical problems or signs of abuse prior to two days before the incident yet another witness in this case a woman who accompanied the mother in dropping off her children recounted that the two children were happy and well-behaved and that nothing notable happened at the drop-off the mother had no relevant criminal history whereas Bryant had three prior accusations including severely beating his girlfriend's three-year-old daughter and you know that me and my cousin because you don't but you don't want to believe what detected what y'all don't want to believe it because he my family or something listen to Brian's next few comments carefully as they reveal two important things about his psyche one Bryant considers babies of little importance relative to adults and is thus unsuited to be a caretaker of others children even if he were to walk away from this unscathed such comments could come back to bite him or CPS to become aware considering he has seven children of his own two Brian's main concern is the set of consequences he faces he shows no real remorse for the loss of a child and should this video be used as evidence in a trial he'll likely face a longer sentence as a result this is about a baby this is my fucking life on the line it is so what John talk to your cousin now this would have been a grown man or something then like we probably would have had a problem but this is a fucking baby as much as I love kids in this fucking know and you know what the doctors are gonna say on the stand there is no way that this kid could have lasted six hours until he got pushed off the chairs he it happened inside of your home okay and so you tell me that there was no time from the time to eat right until all of a sudden when he got pushed off the stairs what about a half hour hour later that's when he started sitting up there having a so-called seizure and I didn't even notice that's what the fuck that was because he was sleeping and he was stretching and shit like he was like a baby stretch when they moved so I didn't know what the fuck was going on so you telling me that it couldn't have lasted that long so whatever happened it should have happened like earlier that day right but there was it was so much more than that it's just it's not how it happened right he arrives he's fine all right when he's there your cousin's there his girl's there he's fine for a while he is a normal baby at some point throughout the course of that day when he's there with you throughout those hours something happens to him Beyond just falling down the stairs kids fall kids get pushed I mean you got how many kids you're on seven they don't die from that not from an 18 you know what I'm saying they don't die I know each step so what more happened between that time frame like I said nothing there's there's pieces of the puzzle that are not being filled here I mean what it comes down to is the kids in your care um the medical doctor that reviews the case for music autopsy and looks it over says okay well this is something that's out of the scope of that you know the baby falling 18 inches this is um actual real physical damage to happen to this kid so you can't film with links as to what happened I mean it's just kind of hard to swallow you know what I'm saying it's it's a hard one to say well you know he's got a lot of kids in there I get that there's a lot of kids and that's ton of stress but you got to know what's going on my kids don't stressing me out not eat kids on the street come on man I can't do it I'll be honest no way there's a lot of children with my babies too I don't know I'll take some stuff together right yeah and most people love their kids of course other people kids and you can ask they can just like when this shit go to court and all that they all gonna be there to tell you hey I watch they kids they kids they never said I said a thing got loud with them got physical with none of my kids know nothing because after this happened everybody got the question in their kids and only it all came back hey my kid ain't said you this my kid ain't said you that so what was different about this day it was an ordinary day to me until what happened though and until he got pushed and I called his mom and told him what happened okay and she was like oh well getting ready because I'm finna come get them anyway what did he act like after he got pushed when you went out there to tend to them what did they act like and he was sitting up there like he was like hesitating the screen because it's like it hurted so bad so I made him about and we sat there in the chair for a minute he drunk some of that damn bottle and we sat up there and I was rocking him like this and he started dozing off I laid him on my bed went in there to finish making the food and to fix the rest of the kids plate and when I came back I said let me move him so he don't fall off this bed and I scooted him up and that's when he flinched like a kid to do it when you wake him up out they sleep or something and I put him in the middle of my bed and I made everybody else place then I went back and got him and put him in a car seat and that's when he started doing that and my wife was on the way home and she came in and noticed that it was Caesars why didn't you call 9-1-1 because I didn't know you didn't know I thought he was just stretching and my wife came in and she was like Junior how long has he been doing it I said Chef about good I just put him in his car seat so he did it as soon as I put him in his car seat and she had just walked through the door I'm trying to rationalize my head I'm trying to envision myself it's this is just really hard to believe I know I didn't put my hands on that baby I didn't do nothing wrong to that baby okay so now what's what about when you travel down the steps with it okay explain that what time what point was did that happen how many hours before today what like maybe an hour or so after he got there but while we're just discussing all this that didn't come up at all when when you were when John asked you William what happened to me why didn't you bring that up because I figured you already told everybody I told you the story right right but I'm just asking I'm asking you I don't carry tool belt like I'm just trying to figure out he was red he had a red mark he had a lumps no bruises no nothing on me so he fell down how many no I'm remembering your steps they go up and then they go up again what parts did you fall down the the first light right there so like right when you walk out of your your house your bedroom there that first portion yes earlier than a day did you go over and under the grass then or the dirt no just the balance their cause oh okay so you fall to there and how are you holding them at the time you fall I was holding him like he's supposed to hold him I had him when I learned like this and he was holding on to my shirt like this okay and you just tripped and fall no well I just passed out oh from what I got a habit of passing out I just don't hold it um all right did you pass out my body gets overheated and Bryant emphasizes his Affliction that causes him to randomly pass out only after changing his story to say that he was holding the baby when he fainted thereafter falling down a set of stairs however the police have already interviewed Brian's wife who said that in the 11 years they had been married Bryant had never randomly passed out nor had he ever mentioned having spontaneously fainted Bryant a true gentleman was likely hiding his severe illness so as to not make his wife worry about him you wake up I mean how long have you passed out for not that long because I don't know because my son was waking me up okay which song is this my five-year-old okay so you pass out you're not sure how long you're out for we couldn't have been that long you have an aspect I mean I have no idea I have no gauge of this is it are we talking five seconds five minutes five hours maybe a possible of a minute okay when you wake up what's the baby doing crying okay and I guess do you have Clarity at that point in time as to what the heck's going on or anything or no I sat there and it was started coming back but I can hear him crying okay so I picked him up examining he didn't have no lumps no bruises on him no nothing where was he laying in relation to you on the like land I find him when I when we failed it's like I landed on top of him a little bit okay so when you woke up from Fallen uh when you come to when your five-year-old wakes you up how are you laying what position on your stomach on your back on your side like my stomach okay sure I understand I was on top of him so the babies underneath you or around where you sitting stomach knees and stomach area Okay because my my legs and shit was all on a baluster what's a balancer really okay I got you so your legs are up on that um babies underneath you you hear him crying when you wake up right is that correct and then he doesn't have anything no bruises no nothing he went bling no nothing it's just what right if I remember correctly no splinters no nothing no and you had nothing no injury well I had a little scrape done with it it wasn't even a straight do you remember that first thing we talked to you in here the night it happened he never ever ever never mentioned that we asked if even that even happened we John and I asked you did you fall down the stairs did Jason fall down the stairs you said no no it didn't happen I mean so that's why it's so it's so it it was we're struggling here with this that's why okay you feel me we're struggling with it because let's say he did fall down the steps like that okay that's not going to do it either that won't it won't that's just like you said up there and told me yeah that I could throw him yeah and I measured it I measured it a 17 and a half feet I could launch him straight into that wall full force what's 17 and a half what's that from what you told me I could wear out where the incident happened in my house the day when you were down the hallway down the Hop said I can launch him down that hallway full force and he hit that wall it's still not sustain them injuries but there's no way he would hit that wall with such Force if he launched him down at 17 feet before he hit the wall but I'm saying he didn't have no bumps on him he didn't have no breaks on him he had no knocks on his head no nothing so what could somebody have did to this baby for him to be like that evidently there was something else going on with it because he didn't have no lumps no bruises no nothing on him there's numerous things that could have happened like what numerous things could have been shaken okay but I heard that they did something on the spinal cord and there was no his retinas were detached from his eyes then that's why they also did something for to his spinal cord to see if they were shaking there too right I I don't know what you're talking about where did you hear this at tell me talk to me from CPS okay I've been involved with Charlie talking to prosecutors I'm sorry I don't I'm not familiar with with CPS with what they said I don't know but the information you just said that they can tell if a baby has been shaking or Not by looking at the spinal cord that's why they say that they was having something else done on his spinal cord to tell them something else done on the spinal cord to tell if he was shaking okay well let's dumped Through The Eyes okay and his retinas were detached from his eyes can you tell me out of all them kids that was running around the house ain't nobody seen nothing there are also two other injuries that was explained to me by the doctor I I'm not even going to try to to even fake pronounce what these injuries are okay but there was two injuries there was letters a through G okay for example I don't know if it went through G when it might have been more than G or or before the letter G okay but on the board okay we hit well it was very they pulled it up on the board in front of me so I'll tell you how many letters there were there's a yes Pass Key okay there's two the one goes to K actually one goes to I and the other one goes to G okay out of this first group there were two letters in here okay and right here two letters that the doctor pointed out that said that it has it is only occurred not only in Kalamazoo but in the entire north of America in North America okay it has only occurred as a result of abuse two of these letters of these injuries okay and I don't and I'm gonna try to tell you which ones they are because I don't know I'm not gonna and I don't remember but they don't see it in car accidents they don't see it in industrial accidents farm accidents they don't see it in anything or dog bites when a dog mauls a kid they don't see it in anything except abuse cases causing death that's it that is it and that's fact so something's got to happen here you see where we're coming from how can we not active the abuse is coming from my house but why is all my kids okay why is all them kids okay and I've been dealing with them way longer than listen to other kids listen you can have other kids over there babysitting all right before this accident oh okay Okay so right now the other kids that's why I'm asking you what's the difference what happened different this day that that's what I'm saying I don't put my hands on them well I guess let me ask you a simple question then this is a very simple one why did you say that you and him did not neither he nor you fell down those stairs that day the first time we talked to you and then you changed it why did you change that that's an easy question because I didn't change it until it because it actually it wasn't a change it was an add-on because they set up here and called me all types of fucking monsters okay no yeah stuff I think yes they need to go ahead dude they said in here all types of monsters I don't know no but I remember I can't remember if it was myself or him specifically the first time we talked to you said hey is it possible and we're trying to figure out you know hey what happened to this kid is it possible the kid fell down the stairs he said no absolutely not and then you know is it possible you're holding them you guys fell down the steps no no that didn't happen Okay your back turned he thoughts Landing no all these different you know possibilities and no no no no no no you know what I'm saying and then so why did you change I don't care you know about that so he had came up later on that night that I thought about it and I was like damn I did fall down the stairs with me so you would just when I asked who that you just had forgotten yes and yes it's just hard to believe you know what I mean you know what else is a little bit hard to believe Brian and that your wife of 11 years okay had no idea about the Second Story no clue it was first year never heard of it that's on that's kind of unbelievable too you got to look at this as an outsider looking and you gotta you gotta agree with us on this you how can how can a reasonable person not agree with us yes that you have to be responsible for this you can't explain it just like John was saying we gave you every opportunity that first night to tell us that something happened on the steps and then you said that you remembered it later that night then you should have called me you were calling me you were calling me all off the hook okay want to know what's going on you never once mentioned that on the second interview you finally mentioned it you know so it's I mean this is your opportunity to tell that either I don't know and I don't know you personally I don't I don't think John does either he never dealt with you but this is your opportunity to to show remorse for what happened I have some remote okay but I had but I didn't sit up there and do nothing to this baby for me to sit up there and guilt trip myself to feeling guilty into something that I didn't do and yes I feel remorse because it happened at my house and that this little baby lost his life but I had nothing to do with it and everybody around Kalamazoo that know me can come to court and vouch for everything nobody ever seen me get physical or fighting with a kid I sit up there and stream and yell at other parents for doing their kids like that and all these witnesses that have come to court and tell the same thing that I can got on a couple of their asses about them sitting up there smacking a baby or doing all this because I don't agree with that shit how often do you lose your temper with kids no never you no I gather my kids here and there sometimes and put them on the wall make them do a push-up position what do you mean put him on the wall make him stand in the corner oh put him on the wall sure Michael oh to keep my older kids they'll tell you I make them do push-up positions stand there do hit the push-up position for five minutes how often would you say you lose your temperamental very very rare again rare for me is very different you know what I mean like our own life when I lose my temper with them is it's not like an explosion in the windows yeah everyone yeah what do you do when you get pissed with the kids when they can did something like I said I put them on the wall or make them hit the push-up position say there is screaming just going straight up cut off the TV they're too young you know what I mean if they're too young they're a baby they can't do a movie they always say they're wrong you put them I mean you put that in their room no I make them sit on my bed with sit on my bed you're not getting up to go through nothing until you're done crying you can ask my wife everybody sit up there and say how do you how do you not react to them crying because I ignore it sometimes because I sit them right there on my bed and I watch my TV or play my game until they're done doing what they're doing I'm like hey you're done crying now all right now you can go play okay so that day was the baby crying excessively that baby ain't never cried since he came to my house you can even ask my wife one time she was there babysitting the baby ain't never crying we have to sit up there and figure out what he wanted if he's hungry or want a bottle or something the baby was sitting in the in the thing and just sit like this he would never lay down no nothing and then for and then you talk about a bruise and then for how how you bring your kids over to a stranger house yo your other son don't want to come upstairs with some strangers and you smacking him off this head in his face to get him to go with some strangers but I'm the one that's abusing the kids though right don't know ain't nobody looking at none of that shit everybody pointing the finger at me because they hey she probably did this shit then dropped him off onto me and then a little shit if it did happen react to that all that shit didn't happen that way that fall didn't trigger something else in the in the brain of this child didn't happen and we asked that was specifically I was one of the first things we did so is it possible this could be pre-existing and then that ball right triggered it no don't sorry so all these people you say can vouch for you about you know never raising your hand never doing this and that they came out for you this exact time they weren't there with you right and again another thing that's hard to believe along with eight kids not getting stressed not possible don't buy it I mean you're a human you don't know me no I don't know anyone who wouldn't get stressed with any kids man come on and you're in the house all day all day I don't know anyone that wouldn't get stressed about that there's a difference between getting stressed and and you know going a while but to say that you don't even get stressed about it it's just a little hard to believe so when we present this report sorry about percent of the press here when this case gets put in front of a jury or the judge all right does jury of your appear sitting there this child is fine when he gets dropped off your cousin attests to that girlfriend tests that Mama tests to that you say it falls 18 inches and or possibly even down the stairs with it but you forgot about it don't know how it died what do you think the jury is going to think about that you think they're just going to say no he didn't have anything to do with it I'm not saying they don't but I think that's it I got a whole lot of witnesses to prove my character though finances are only are only good you know they only take you so far when we're presented in this you know what we're going to look at you know we talked to you and we got your side of the story and and you know we wanted to believe it I can have family members over there they tell you we want to believe the facts that are given to us in the case right and the facts are you're there with the kid and the doctor saying hey not possible that baby died from it this is how the baby died it's just it's just the science behind it so when that's presented in front of a journey what do you how do you expect them not to believe that how can I mean we we see a lot of different weird stuff uh and so we can kind of you know make some leaps of judgment but you know when you're talking to you know a jury of people who don't normally deal with this kind of stuff how do they how does it explain to them that a baby dies from this how how can you rationalize you know what I mean I don't know but I do believe that there was another case of something like this where the dad had his daughter had just got his daughter she died while she was in his custody he'd go to prison for they say oh well this happened and that happened and this happened to the baby come to find out he get released because he didn't do the shit all that shit was already done so how do this man go to prison for it and then come to come back to find out that he was telling the truth I don't know that particulars on that case we don't we had no idea the baby was in his custody yeah she said he beat the baby said he even molested with that baby and then all of a sudden they come back that he was telling the truth about the shit yeah I don't know I don't know I can't actually I didn't investigate without ceiling I don't know it's impossible to say talk to him all of a sudden his baby died in his custody he got in trouble for that shit he got found not guilty after he can be in the prison for it um you can probably look at 500 murder cases and every single piece can have a different set of circumstances just because it's you know say you look at 500 murders where a husband killed a wife there's going to be differences there'll be similarities of course but there's a difference there's differences sure man or death cause of death what led up to it there's just lots of differences you know what I mean I'm talking black right now for some shit that I really didn't fucking do and me and my family going through all of this shit and I didn't do nothing nothing and I'm trying to rationalize man I am trying to rationalize what else could have happened that's what I don't get because then nothing happened I didn't do nothing to the vein and then for him to sit up there and say the force that was done to him I know damn well what now one of my kids could have did something like that and then for you to sit up there and say a grown man like me collage this baby 17 and a half feet down the wall he hit that wall full force and still not sustain them entries what what the fuck did I do to that baby then for him not to have no lumps no bruises no shit what did I do I didn't do nothing to that baby it didn't injure itself I know I didn't do nothing to that baby who do you think too I have no clue I've been sitting up there telling everybody and it's even more it's even her close friends to her to even think she doing shit to her fucking kids but I'm the one that's on the chopping block for this shit you you think it's possible that he that he did it to himself no for him to say the energy the injuries that he's saying how can he do it to himself right and it's not I think you're you know maybe getting the wrong I don't know whatever we're not the ones that are saying this is the unforced these are the doctors they're telling us I'm not a doctor nor is he right it's just it's the information that's given to us hey Z Model is this amount of force you know is it possible the baby fell from 18 inches no not possible at all okay is it possible that you know he fell down these flooded steps no that's not consistent with these injuries either just like you know if someone got shot in the head right as I said you're consistent with a gun show yes sir you know I mean there's there's certain things that are consistent with uh injuries and and just that's where the amount of force things coming into it you know that it took a good amount of force to cause these injuries and you the injuries were sustained while you were there so any reasonable person is going to say okay well then he knows what happened to the baby and he's the one responsible for whatever happened to jcm I know I didn't do nothing to Jason every every like I said everybody can tell you I can have family members come over there and say damn how don't you hear this kids running around doing this and doing that I let my kids be kids I didn't have a childhood like that so I let them do what they got to do if they're not sitting up there murdering each other breaking each other or fighting or something then there's no need for me to step in so when you fall down the stairs with with Jason did you think at all but maybe she called 9-1-1 or bring him to the hospital get them checked out did you consider doing it no okay did he act normal after that yeah he was acting like it's saying so okay and when you called or texted his mother did instead I just you know I mean like why didn't you just bring him the hospital instead so when he's acting string because one of two calls because I said up there and called the mama and told her that he was acting weird she told me don't worry about it she was on her way and if something was going on with him she was going to take him to the hospital I know but if I'm saying watching your kids or something happens so I don't I don't care about calling you if there's something wrong with a kid I'm gonna give him to the hospital I'll call you after I'm there you know what I mean so he's getting treated hey here's what's going on man this is what happened and here's where we're at you know I don't care what the mind has to say at that point you know if it's something where it's bad enough you feel you need to call them out and say hey your kid's acting like this why not just bring them to the hospital or call for an ambulance I realize you're there watching other kids we can call for an ambulance ambulance to come transport them you know if transport's an issue inside my line okay so like I say he was crying I didn't see no not so Bruce my phone is dead or facing on that thing so I'm like okay the only time that I've seen approvals on this face was right here on this chin from when he got pushed off them downstairs that was the only bruise I seen on him they bruised that quickly yeah right off the stairs and where's your layer and I ain't seen no bruise on him all day and I've been changing his clothes and all of it changing diapers and everything ain't noticed nothing else on it I'm looking up there I even kiss him on his cheek a couple times thank you I don't know I don't know what to tell you other than what what I would already present you with is what we're gonna have to you know and what the experts did she had documented in their report their medical reports well if there's something more like like Bill said if there's something more that slipped your mind that you didn't think about like before when you didn't think about going down the steps and sat there and see the brainstorm the shit out of me well it didn't happen to when she brainstormed you it didn't happen to spear up the memory that you felt on the steps with him did you know that I talked to her yeah okay did she ask you about it I told her but what would you tell it why didn't you tell her because it did I forgot and she know how I forget after being beaten your head with space shoveling all that shit remember some things you just some things you forget and some things that's pretty significant though Brian it's pretty significant don't you think and that being facetious here I'm being serious don't you think it's kind of significant it's quite an important piece to tell two weeks later and then never tell your wife until your wife is told in November you didn't tell your wife for almost three months and then I told her you know actually it was sooner than that no it wasn't I'll tell you when I talked to her doctor November 7th talked to her a couple different times and here I didn't how often do you pass out November 6th I passed out a lot sometimes when I'm standing in the Sun for too long if I'm walking down the street and get overheated I'll pass out are you do you have epilepsy or medical conditions you know already asked the doctor they can even look into it but then they put me on this medicine and everything it was still happening then we went to a different doctor and he come and find out say hey well guess what you're not a diabetic at all so I haven't been sitting in the chair and got so hot and passed on the chair while I was getting my hair braided really yeah when was that this was some years ago and who was braiding your hair um my wife's friend was who what's your name girl named Tiana Brown Tiana Brown my wife was sitting on the porch is she light skin her friend was on the board yeah and everybody kept asking did you all right you are right and I'm like yeah yeah I'm good and then all of a sudden I was just four years this I can't remember what year this was but it happened a couple years ago so is your wife familiar with the fact that you pass out a lot yeah he fell to the ground no I while I was getting my hair braid just like fell asleep I mean yeah it's like no it wasn't just like falling asleep because I woke up to them shaking me talking about am I all right and I'm like yeah I just need to go and get some air and I went and sat in front of the air conditioner and I was fine yeah I don't know you know who that is all right I'm just trying to see if it's the same one or not I don't know we should use the debate I just know she used to work at Hanson with my wife Hanson's what's that the handsome side windows oh the windows yeah 1-800 Hansons yeah you know she told my wife to see braids hair and my wife paid her to braid my hair one day and she came over she said cause out of curiosity like ten dollars that's it 15 so that cost 10 or 15. this I had this up for about seven eight months what's that cause free I did it myself so we're not supposed to be passed out I'm sorry no I I could once you pass out yeah this was a couple years ago with Tiana Brown yeah okay a couple years ago you know guys I was walking when I won't get overheated during the summertime that's why I don't we're ready to leave the house okay the last time you passed out well that's a couple times last year okay if I'm a fishing Bank you know we're at Kalamazoo River who is with you nobody nobody did you follow me in the river no no no I don't get close to the water because I can't swim okay so you passed out my fishing what month can't remember the money I know I was doing summertime though okay time before that you passed out wait no but you were alone you're saying okay did you tell anybody about this yeah oh I can tell my wife about it you told your wife passed down with drink fishing yeah okay what uh do you ever is there a certain doctors use that you saw about these different passing out spells fainting spells yeah and he misdiagnosed me and said today was because I had that I was a diabetic and come to find out that I'm not even a fucking brother do you know when this was you saw the Doctor Who the doctor was is in kanzu you remember a hospital that Family Health Center over around Patterson okay and when you pass out like in the street and stuff like that is that somewhere ambulances get cold and pick you up or anything or no you usually just wake up no because somebody wake me up and I'm gonna maybe like how you find you need people cut and I'm like no I'm good I just I'm fixing to go home is it like I don't know do you drink or anything is it from drinking or it's just normal just happens and just happens laughs okay time before that time before the at least something walking down the street to the store when I can't remember the days and months summer fall summer it always happened during the summer time when my body gets overheated walking down the street what street I've been walking down Trumbull Street going to Max's and this didn't happen where I can have people come out of some control water on my face and everything but when you were walking down the street this last summer and it happened what street do you recall was crazy oh it was Oh I thought I was assuming walking to East Main walking down to the spring Trimble I think we're on tremble okay and uh you just doesn't feel a nonsense before it happens it just like like hot I'm sweaty and everything just go black and I'll just just fall like how how much of a time do you have before it happens like you start sweating for like 30 seconds no I just started swiping in it because like that already doing this is it like a light switch you feel squeezing the knobs and you're blacked out like that okay so something like I swear I'm like okay I'm good and I keep taking a couple steps and everything just go black and I just go boom so you're walking down the street at tremble and going to Max's is that a liquor store all right all right and then uh did somebody wake you up or somebody throw water on you you said or is that something some other what was that just a bystander okay somebody's just within the house and seeing me fall and came out there and the next thing I know I was covered in water he did the no aside from the diabetic thing when they misdiagnosed you do they have you on any medications for fainting no because he said that he said it was because my sugar and stuff was getting too low but your sugar is fine oh are you epileptic uh I don't know that means uh do you have suffered from seizures on a regular basis have you ever had a seizure so the fainting spells don't accompany of seizure they just you just fall and you get head injuries with these well yeah we already taked in there well just saves me some time wow yeah would you sign the medical release forms so we can get some medical records for you yeah okay you said Family Health Center is that your primary care there he was until I switched over here excuse me uh doctor Andy what his name was or she you know every time I called and scheduled me appointment I gotta sit up there and tell him I don't remember who my doctor is but so yeah that's okay so if you always went by the same you know uh Brent Barnett you could sign this data and then your date of birth or social security number whichever you want thank you uh do you agree did you read it what I'm asking for okay you go to that okay um you know it's um it's unfortunate that we're sitting here like this okay but we have a dead baby here and you can have been everybody's trying to make a thing like I can dance something to this baby when I have not did nothing to you know what I'm saying I don't know if you I don't know if you you've um I don't know if you would think that the our goal is to arrest you on this okay it's not it's not the goal all right the goal is that's that's so actually the worst nightmare of an of uh at least a good detective is to put the wrong person in jail so the worst thing sit up here and get good news talking about I can go see my kids Thursday and everything and go report been doing everything I'm supposed to be doing and also not get hit with this when I ain't did nothing then you're talking about felony murder foreign what what the investigation shows and what the what we're told by doctors that's it we had no other thing to go off of and and all the information that we're receiving is there's no way this kid could sustain that the injuries that they had and it sustained life yeah how can I really do that much stuff to a baby without leaving March roses lumps no nothing all right please tell me that I I I don't have the answer to that I don't I wish I did I wish I did for just about all the kids just can die from abuse and Kalamazoo and all been beaten you can have marks lumps bruises every fucking wear I watch the news I sit up here and sit up there and wish these people be thrown in prison for this shit but they all came back uh the autopsy they can have lumps bruises and beaten like this and like this and like that but the only thing you could tell me is that the amount of force that was done to that baby so what the hell could I have done to a baby with that much force shake it I'm guessing you're asking me a question I'm trying to answer it I'm just trying to give you an answer here shake it shake the hell out of it um we looked at the autops before all that stuff like any external injuries saying is there any external uh yeah falling down the steps and stuff like that yeah I mean there was there was right here on there yeah um the flight of steps on chin in the restaurant oh and the rest are all internal so okay actually our renders inside yeah what's that on the inside and and they're all internal right yeah I'm just trying to figure out nothing external that would cause it yeah how do you go down on a flight of how many steps those are and baby has no injuries that's what I don't get unless you're a grown man probably 180 pounds I don't know maybe more maybe less now I am okay so 180 pounds lands on top of a baby that weighs probably 20 pounds on a piece of wood you know what I mean on a wooden steps with not just you know from standing still but the velocity of going down steps landing on them how he doesn't have any marks how is that house I don't know I checked in for lumps and bruises okay so there's that just all of a sudden I heard when his brother pushed him all I heard it was a loud ass thump he rolled over and as soon as I picked him up a dead like this I noticed a bruise right there I can tell you if if you were holding me and I fell down the steps and you landed on top of me I think I'd have some works and wouldn't you say likewise if I landed on top of you probably the same I don't know because I fell down a whole flight of stairs and didn't have nothing so that's what I'm sitting up here trying to get through my head how did I sit up here and do with this to this baby when there's other babies around here is being beaten and killed in Kalamazoo and there's all types of stuff to sit up there and prove that they were beaten okay but we can't we can't elaborate or or anything on those and we're we're not that's not what we're here right now we're here on this what happened on August 23rd that's it well I didn't do nothing to Jason on August 23rd or any day before that started it's just not what the investigation doesn't show that right the investigation shows what it shows the investigation is so something but they don't show the ideas of them because I didn't do nothing you're the only one that is capable of doing it you're the only one with the opportunity to do it the only one with the strength to do it you're it and there were a lot of mistakes made that day a lot she probably shouldn't have left her her kid with somebody was watching seven kids you know there was a lot of mistakes made that day and nobody's perfect we all make mistakes we're all human Brian we're all human but when there's a mistake that's made we try to we got to try to make the best out of it all right we gotta try to make the best out of the bad situation that it is and try to make it into it not I mean not that it could be made into a positive but make the best of it can be okay for the person and that's all we can do that's all you can do right now that's it but if if you lay out all the facts in the case and all of your responses in the case just it it doesn't add up it just doesn't fit it doesn't feel me it doesn't work it doesn't fit doctors were saying that that kid didn't arrive injured like that it couldn't have sustained seven hours six hours like that there's no way there is no way and then especially with at what time your cousin's girlfriend were there at several hours after Jason was dropped off and and there's just no way that he would have been able to be acting even not even halfway normal a little bit normal it's just not possible not but it's just not possible you know the inside you see and it's hard for you to probably grasp it you know why because there isn't so much physical outside it's it's all inside it's tough you know it's all inside it's nothing you can physically see with your with your eyes that's a lot some people can't grasp that I have a hard time with grass and stuff like that and that's it I got an autistic song with congratulations I never did nothing to him and he's still living and he's well I think I understand that's a baby stink got me still living you know and we're not we're not here talking about your artistic son all right we're here talking about Jason and his four-year-old brother pushed him off of a step isn't gonna is not going to trigger or cause he's the amount of injury that he has otherwise we wouldn't be sitting here talking to you if that was okay if it was remotely possible We're not gonna go stick our head our necks out on the line here it's not worth it it's not worth it to anybody to do that okay nobody wants it I would have been good with if they said that could have happened that way I'd have been good with that you never would have seen me again right you never would have seen me again if the doctors would have told John and I that if that him being pushed off of even the top step the third step okay or is it two or three total it's totally two okay he was on the first then there's a second one to get up to right okay even if he was in the top the Second Step okay not the first one but the second one if he was on there pushed off and the factors would have said you know what he could have sustained these injuries as a result of being pushed off that step I'd be good with it John would be good with it we wouldn't be sitting in here because it'd be deemed an accident but when we're told by more than one Medical Professional that is absolutely impossible that that happened that way then what what do we what how do we how are we supposed to react we wouldn't be doing our job Brian wouldn't be doing our damn job if we were to ignore that we'd be negligent in our job and then it's also crazy how you stand multiple examiners when you the one that sat up there and told me that one of them when he first was examined one of them said it could happen like that then you also told me that the other one that the other one that's why y'all was having another one come in and they said that um there's no way that it could have happened I'll explain there's a conflict listen the conflict of interest and and what the medical examiners were saying because one was saying one thing and another one was saying something different you know so what is that because I never said that to you Brian I it was CPS that told you that okay it wasn't me you sat up there and told me yeah another examiner coming in to examine him because ER doctors messed up all the time you did sit up there and tell me the ER doctor the autopsy Brian I didn't say he did to autopsy okay I'm saying that's the one that said talk that you talk to at the hospital okay and and the remote the reason there's multiple doctors there okay I agree with that ER doctors are different than pediatric doctors okay ER doctor C dulls they don't specialize in children okay yeah and CPS was talking to the hospital and all this cancer I cannot and I won't answer yes they're telling you what they told me okay like I went in court when we went to court like they said out there and told the judge there's nothing that they could really do to me right now because one medical examiner was saying this and everyone was saying something you're wrong it wasn't a medical examiner okay it wasn't a medical examiner there's only one medical examiner [Music] the pediatrician specialist doctor okay he he he initially came into the ambulance to the ER we're at General ER doctor a general physician sign he's not equipped to deal with that so then he then Jason got transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit okay the PA it's called the pick you I believe okay that's where doctors that that are specialized in pediatrician pediatric care or a team of them oversee him and that is who I was seeing and who I was dealing with before he passed away before he was pronounced dead okay and then they harvested his organs I was dealing with them and then after that I was dealing with the pathologist who deals with him after he's dead okay that's a lot different than an ER doctor an ER doctor is just a general physician he was not he was not equipped to deal with this so that's why he's immediately transferred to the picu all right that's what I'm trying to explain you now what CPS is talking to you about I'm not going to answer for them but they're probably I'm gonna guess and they're talking about the damn ER doctor but I don't know that for sure I'm just guessing I didn't have to go to court for none of this until they talked to all the other doctors yeah well we'll we'll have to model thrall then okay but it's just like I'm just telling Court that's all on records I'm just telling you I'm telling you right now conflicts it I talked to it I talked to the doctor I talked to the pediatricians gave you a rational explanation then you don't want to hear it okay and that's not on me that's on you I gave you a reason why that could have happened okay now I wouldn't I would have been talking about the ER doctor right what are they talking about these other doctors and then we'll have what we have all we have okay we have the records from every we have every record for Jason that exists from the time he was born okay up until his date of death all right we have everything so there's no question we have every record there is to have on it all right so if you're what you're saying is true it'll be in the records but I was not conveyed anything that that no doctor told me okay the whatever you were saying he could have seen that injury from falling from 18 inch step didn't happen I'm told by more than one doctor that that didn't happen that way okay so that's the and that was I'm trying to be decent we didn't explain to you this you know I thought I was trying to be at least trying to to lay this out for you and explain it like you said before if that was the case that they said yeah you know it's possible this child died in this manner who would be here it's that simple well I don't know because CPS is damn they're like y'all too they sit up there and they've been doing their investigation too and they've been keeping in contact with a lot of close people that I know too and like they've been telling everybody hey they don't the autopsy is not really saying anything the only thing that they have to go on is the medical examiners because like they said that they'd have been took my rights from me and everything because the only thing that they was waiting for was the autopsy report to come back I mean if you if you want me to speak for CPS I can I know I mean same ability canner I don't know what CPS telling you why they're telling you where their information the surest I could've not been talking to me right I haven't talked to CPS at all about this um I don't know I I don't know what they have going on with I don't know if it's something that are you talking about they're trying to terminate parental rights to your other kids is that what you're talking about yeah I don't know I have no that's what I'm saying though when we went to court and they was asked about all that um in front of the little hearing judge over there yeah they that's when they told them well hey you know how long ago was this though what a couple months ago like three months ago yeah well hey the autopsy report isn't really say anything so the only thing that we really have to go on is what the medical examiners are talking about okay I hate the medical examiners report but don't know that point in time I don't know he said like three four months ago I don't know what reports were available to them at that time I don't still I guess it's kind of naked it's not and I talked to him they was waiting on him he has people was waiting on you yeah get them copies of the um to let them see the autopsy reports and I was waiting on Pathologists yeah and like they came and they said well hey the autopsy report isn't really saying anything because it was a preliminary one the final one was done I believe in October that you can tell baby that's disabled us I mean interrupture I'm just trying to explain what the best I can about yeah but but it's hard to you know try to rationalize for someone else I don't know what's up going on right what they're reading it's not we yeah we and unfortunately we we don't really know their process do we well no just because we work somewhat in conjunction with each other but we you know they do their job we do ours yeah so I can't speak for them their way I can have a cigarette because I'm gonna go to jail anyway I'll be answering you you can't let me smoke a cigarette now hey you know I'd be in the next room I'll keep you in this room we'll have to put you in another room late because I can't do it I can't sit in the Smoke yeah I remember you said you remember that yeah I
