Successful franchise onboarding begins before the sale by establishing core values and expectations, requires comprehensive training to prevent franchisee failure, involves franchisee responsibility in funding and site selection, and is an ongoing process as businesses continuously develop new products and methods.
Onboarding New Franchisees: Best Practices for Growth
Added:[Music] my name is Gary okay gross oh I'm the founder and managing partner of a company called franchise growth solutions we do a whole bunch of stuff but to break it down into three quick buckets we developed franchises for people who have an idea have a concept or have an operating model our second bucket is the one that most of our competitors don't focus on and we love to do and that is to sell franchises so we actually sell franchise franchises for our clients and then the third is once we scale them up we get them in front of private equity investors venture capitalists people who can bring money to the table and either help them exit or helped me grow one is an expression to your new franchisee of your core values if they don't know what you stand for if they don't know what your mission statement is if they don't know your rules in your respect or lack thereof then you're a well know whether or not you have the right franchisee so core values goes back to selecting franchisees but that's a very important component about onboarding for me that's before the sale that starts before the person actually becomes a franchisee because when you pick up the phone and you're talking to that franchisee or you're meeting with that franchisee face to face that person that prospect may become your franchisee so you might as well take the approach that you're onboarding from the day you're meeting the prospect first face-to-face meeting it's almost like I'm talking about the business so I kind of tell them all the negative things you can expect yeah so they know and I know that they're really good to in kind like you were saying oh well they say they want to go on vacation in August in August a target here come with me here they have certain things that just won't work with the way we do things I kind of talked them out of it in a way and theirs and Robin you have been the light in the head I've seen more discovery days where the father has said I ended up sleeping in an automobile I max my credit cards and look at today I have a hundred franchises and I go to Florida after hear what they ended up doing is sometimes making the franchisee think that being successful is that a lot easier than it really is training or the lack of training very often leads to franchisees going out of the system because they don't understand what they're supposed to be doing or your training hasn't been strong enough to the point where they feel confident in what you're what you've told them and they start to reinvent the wheel and we let our sales team they're really the ones who initiate that first relationship right but they should just disappear there's nothing I hate worse than when I get sold a new technology or something in my sales guy disappears and now I'm dealing with someone I've never taught a franchisee has to have some level of responsibility in the process they need to be responsible on the funding side they need to be working with you on the site selection side on the construction side okay that you know you don't want the franchisee to come on board and think you're gonna call them and say okay your store is ready in my opinion onboarding goes on forever because you're always developing new products you're always developing new methods you're always opening up new restaurants or new bricks and mortar stores and launching new platforms so you're always onboarding your franchisees into the new ideas that they expect you to come up with
