Effective SaaS onboarding UX requires avoiding overwhelming information (60-70% of users skip guides/videos), implementing personalization based on user needs, simplifying complex multi-step flows by separating different types of information, maintaining clear guidance aligned with user goals, ensuring signup forms are usable with proper labels and testing, and most importantly, aligning the onboarding process with users' mental models and behavioral expectations to prevent abandonment and build loyalty.
SaaS Onboarding UX Design: Key Strategies for Startups
Added:if you are a product designer or product owner or a co-founder or founder of a startup or SAS company the first issue would be how to design your onboarding process or user experience for your onboarding new users when they come to your site you they try to you know get a trial of your product they try to test your product their first usage their first interaction would be the onboarding process so if you mess up your onboarding user experience or the first interaction of your users with your product this is going to be a very big trouble for you later on in acquiring new customers or loyal customers now research says that 40 to 50% of the users when they use a poor onboarding they are not going to come back to your product again they are going to switch to some competitor so this is going to be a very big hit for your user base 86% of the people they are going to stay loyal so if you want your customers to stay loyal to your product your onboarding user experience must be designed really really well so in this video we are going to figure out how we can you know design a simple and uh userfriendly customized user onboarding flow now I am Muhammad Assan I have 20 years of experience as a product designer ux consultant us experience design consultant I have helped numerous SAS startups in the past today I'm going to give you five or six points on how and what things are uh the most found problems in uh an onboarding user experience so number one would be overwhelming info so last time I was testing I think it was consulto app I'm going to share the screens over here whenever I opened a new tab or new you know once I log in they showed me a tons of information overlapping you know uh guides tour guides or product guides to show each and every featur so I mostly skip them users are going to mostly skip the these uh guides or tours or PDF guides or videos they are not going to watch this okay so keep that in mind they are going your onboarding user experience should be integrated into your app rather than having showing different pieces or different videos keep in mind that 60 to 70% people they are not going to watch they are going to skip this this is a research done by Google okay so I'm not giving it from from my you know my experience it is what Google says that they actually tested this and most of the users they actually skipped the video in the start explaining the product so next is lack of personalization I was working with a product hunt top product and I was only hired to design their onboarding process what we did is that I actually personalize the experience of each user and guided it towards the starting templates that he would be using to generate different reports for example he connected with a Facebook database so I only showed the Facebook templates to start with so before that the product owner or you know uh the startup uh founder they were actually doing they were showing like 12 different templates for Google for all different you know data sources but I actually uh you know um you know advise that we should redesign it and we should only personalize it what the user actually requires okay so this is the lack of personalization this is another issue with um you know onboarding user experience with most of the startups next is complex flows so I was testing a SAS app that was called skilled score and their onboarding flow was really complex they had a lot of issues they have lot of screens like 10 or 12 screens it doesn't matter how many screens we have but the information on those screens should not feel complex it should be one thing in a step so they were asking like two or three things in a single screen on an onboarding process so they were asking like skills different kind of skills like communication skills and they were asking about professional skills like programming designing something like that and they were asking both of these in a single screen and I said why don't you separate these because these are different skills communication or interpersonal skills are a different set of skills and your professional skills programming PHP Java these are all different skills they are practical skills so try to uh you know uh minimize the complexity try to you know separate these two screens next is um poor guidance okay so most of the time if you are uh in an onboarding process there might be things they want you to complete first so complete this first complete this first and you would be you know uh confus that I I want to create a post uh on the Facebook or I want to create this and and they are asking me to complete my profile so your goal might be something else and the onboarding process might be guiding you uh away from your goal so this is called poor guidance you are not realizing what the user goal was in the first place so you have to take care of the user goals because goals are going to make the users blind make my word users are going to get blind blinded by their goals they will only look for things they are looking for they will not look at any other buttons or anything that is in their way they will skip it they will um uh press the next step or something like that they want to try and get their hands dirty inside the product they would try it themselves this is another thing now I have seen some of uh recently I have seen some of the problems in the sign up uh forms so I call it sign up walls or you can call them sign up usability problems or whatever you can call them signup walls most of the time signup had a lot of issues recently I have seen two such uh instances success. a and one more product I'm going to list over here they had sign up issues even in the start of their user name or your your your name so when they ask me my name the name field had a lot of problems so make sure your uh sign up forms they have proper labels they they have been tested with the content uh someone enters for example if I enter my full name like Muhammad Asen perves there were some of the form fields on different startup signups or SAS product signups where I was not able to uh put my full name over there so they were asking like uh we we have a limit on this field okay so what if someone has a long name like uh maybe 30 or 35 characters why are you limiting it so this is another question about signup walls or sign up forms try to study the sign up usability I will make a different video on sign up or forms usability and user experience design that is a will be a different story it would be a different topic but right now just focus on clear labels uh clear messages test your form out test the usability of the form test the buttons test the buttons have the proper action that user really uh is going to take uh start next or create account or something like that don't say submit or send or something like that now the last is which which is going to rule everything okay so this is going to rule everything that is users mental model how users mental model different is different from your onboarding flow or process okay so user might be thinking that I am going to create an account and I will get a link uh verify and this is my usual model a standard you know process so I have tested few of the you know startups and what happened with me was very confusing they actually emailed me a password to login and you know I was not accustomed to that my mental model I thought that I have to they will just verify my link and I will click over there and I will be you know prompted to another page and I will set my password myself so that is my control or users control so everything should be in users control so if you are giving or limiting the control of your user to your product and you are you know uh robbing the user from full control this is different from users uh you know mental model and behavior typical Behavior so make sure your product is aligned to user mental model or your onboarding process is aligned with the user goals and user mental model the this will eliminate the difference and the problems with your onboarding experience that is my video I will see you soon in another video and I will talk about user experience design a bit more if you have any projects or you want to work with me collaborate with me on Pro product design landing page design website
