Added:trekking covet is going beyond pcr nasal tests rapid tests and contact tracing researchers are now looking at the levels of the virus through a community's wastewater dr kubar joins us to talk about this and what it tells about the people who are asymptomatic or not testing good morning dr kumar it's good to see you good morning amanda good to see you too i was reading this article that that you sent us here out of wisconsin this is called wastewater epidemiology yeah you know it's just one of the articles i found you know it's happening all over the country it's really intriguing uh it's over the last year since 2020 they've looked at waste water and the levels of covid in the wastewater now we know that we excrete covet in our stool and so it certainly makes sense that you can get a sense of the prevalence of cobit in a community by checking the wastewater the sewage and what we found over time is that we that you can predict a surge and can also predict the ending of a search so there's very valuable information that can be gained with testing wastewater for covet happening across the country though i haven't read any reports of it happening here in in the state of texas from what you know or maybe you can maybe you can't predict uh do you think that will happen in our communities anytime soon i hope so you know there's a lot of different companies that are doing it in utah i was up there not too long ago it's a combination of uh universities byu university utah and the state government out in boston in the east coast at private companies that are doing this and the good news is that you know in in san diego they're doing it with the uc san diego medical center and before this recent surge in san diego they reported a huge spike they're like man we haven't seen this kind of spike in kobe throughout the pandemic and sure enough right after they reported that about a week later we started seeing the omicron surge and now the good news about it on the east coast and in utah and many of denver there's a lot of communities that are reporting their wastewater data and they're starting to see the curves decline so it can also predict the end of a search you can predict the beginning and the end so the optimistic data that we're getting from some of these wastewater studies throughout the country is that in the places that are hardest hit or the first hit like on the east coast in boston and california that they the amount of covet and wastewater the curve is starting to turn around and so what you'll probably see is the matter of coming days that perhaps the surge of clinical cases is also going to go down another interesting fact is that in many communities are saying that the amount that we're reporting either in the hospitals or even by testing far underestimates the actual count which does go along with what we all kind of see on the ground that many people might have mild symptoms and never get tested now that's probably way more prevalent than we realize probably accounting for a large part of the surge there is a reason to be optimistic then i think is what you're telling us yeah i think that the the the most recent wastewater data in the communities that were first infected that showed the huge surge is starting to show a decline and we're seeing that if you see our little curve you know i mean this is the biggest surge that we've ever had what that means is just hospital cases right because there's so many people that are infected that if you even if you're less virulent if you're more transmissible the number of people that are unvaccinated or immunocompromised they're susceptible to hospitalization it's definitely going to go up and we're already starting to see the curve flatten in our community and in other communities the wastewater data tells us that it's starting to go down so yeah we need some good news on this on this front and so i think there's a little good news here reasons to be optimistic and good news and more information that can help us all out dr kumar thank you so much and if you have a question for dr kumar don't forget you can email us at askdoctorkumar gmail.com also check out his website drkumar.com
