Victor Turner's theory of liminality describes the transitional phase between social stages (preliminal, liminal, postliminal) where individuals experience ambiguous roles and statuses, creating what he termed 'anti-structure' that paradoxically strengthens social structures; during this liminal period, participants develop 'communitas'—a sense of shared community and commonness—that ensures new social positions remain connected to collective experiences, as demonstrated in rituals like coronations where future leaders experience life from the perspective of common people before assuming power.
Victor Turner's Liminality & Communitas in Symbolic Anthropology
Added:hello everyone welcome to A's and today we are going to discuss the topic liminality by Victor Turner so what do you understand by liminality see we all move from one stage to another stage in our life and during this moment or transition from one stage to another stage in between you have a ritual or a ceremony being performed okay ritual or rights which are performed okay while transiting from one stage to other stage right so while you are moving from here to here what happens you conduct a right or a ritual and this has been called as life cycle [Music] ritual okay life cycle rituals because during your lifespan while transiting from one stage to another stage you celebrate these rights or rituals and the term used for this life cycle rituals is rights T passage okay right so now what happens when you are in stage one you have certain roles okay that is your responsibilities which you have to perform and you have certain status that means you hold a particular [Music] position same is the case with stage two you have roles you have status now take an example a girl who is going through a puberty stage okay so first there is a girl what is the role of the girl girl is expected to perform certain activities as a child she is not having much responsibility is she's allowed to go to school she's allowed to play and she is to allowed to study but when the life cycle ritual or the menstruation ritual that happens okay after that she's believed to have become woman okay so now what happens because of this the roles expectations from the girl differs and the behavior expected from the woman is different and the girl is different so now she is able or capable to bring an alliance between the two communities so the level of the status that woman has got is very much different from the girl okay so that's why the roles and statuses have changed but what Victor turna says is that during this phase okay so during the performance of this ritual or the rights she is not at the stage one she is not at the stage two okay so she is neither here nor there she is between and Bix Bix means between the two positions okay and here the status and roles are ambiguous the status and roles are ambiguous okay so which is very different right so this transition phase has been called as linal phase okay this transition phase has been called as linal phase by Victor Turner and the stage before transition is called as preliminar and the stage after the transition phase is known as post linal right so now we have understood this we have understood what is prelimin what is post linal and what is linal okay and this stage one is [Music] prelimin okay so where did this Victor Turner get this concept from he has taken this concept from Arnold van D gup from Arnold van D gups division of Rights the passage division of Rights the [Music] passage into three subdivisions okay so he has divided it into separation then transition and in Inc [Music] Corporation so what happens in the first stage okay so in the first stage before first stage in the first stage what happens you are removed from the previous status and roles before entering this transition phase all your status and roles are removed and now you undergo the transition phase and after the completion of the rights or rights of life cycle rituals okay so that are performed okay you are reincorporated into the society with the changed status of change status and roles okay so here existing roles are removed okay so that is separation you are moved away from the existing rules and then you are made to go through the transition period and then you are reincorporated into the second stage okay so this transition phase has been called as anti structure by Victor Turner okay so we have seen this is called as preliminar linal okay and this is post linal so Victor Turner called the arold veps three stages in a different manner that is prelimin linal and post linal and this linal period is a transition period during this period the person is neither there nor here he's between and bit fixed and he's going through the transition phase now in the normal times in the society we have a social structure and the social structure determines your roles and statuses so as a girl what is your role what you have to do how you have to behave has been fixed and what is your status it has been fixed and as a woman your roles your status has been fixed okay so you know what is your roles and your statuses but between these structures there is a phase that is known as anti-st structure so during this transition period okay I have told you their roles and statuses their roles and statuses are ambiguous okay so these are ambiguous in nature and this he calls us anti structure because when your roles and Status are not clear what happens this would go against the structure okay that is anti structure but again Victor Turner gives a different explanation alog together to it suppose let me talk about certain examples okay so suppose you have seen ha pilgrimage Undertakers and you have the AA devotees who go to sabarimala or take any example what happens before going or before undertaking this pilgrimage okay so they have a particular status and after undertaking this pilgrimage they have a different status okay so you tend to see them in a different manner their respect and their status is going to increase but during this process it is unclear okay now Victor Turner says that this anti-structure so what happens from Monday to Sunday you tend to work on a routine basis and you do that mundane work and Sunday what you'll do you'll try to stop that and you'll try to have fun or you undertake some form of relaxation or Rejuvenation why only to get back on one day with more energy and more rigor right so in the similar manner he says that this anti structure this anti structure or the period of linity it is present only to strengthen only to strengthen the structure okay just like Sunday and I'll give you an example he says that while studying demo Society while studying demo Society of Zambia or [Music] Zimbabwe okay so Deo Society of Zimbabwe okay so while studying these tribes there is a life cycle ritual that is happening so if you see the coronation of the king coronation of the king so now a normal person has to undertake the crown ship okay so now he has to become the king okay so before becoming the king okay he was a normal [Music] man okay and after that he becomes the king now during the coronation process okay so the person the normal person who might have held different status previously has to behave as common man with least status okay here status might be different status one here the status two okay so but here what happens during this process okay this we have already studied the life cycle ritual is anti-structure because your roles and the statuses are not fixed here what he is made to do is that he is made to mingle with the common people so the person who has to become the king is made to mingle with the common people and to see okay see and [Music] experience the life of the downtrodden okay he is made to experience the life of the down roaden so this coronation [Music] process which is part of [Music] liminality is creating a feeling of commonness among the participants it is creating a feeling of commonness among the participants and this Victor Turner called as [Music] communitas right so you can see here what is happening now the person who is to who is going to become the king is already experiencing the pain of the down rodent so it is believed that when this person becomes the king he would keep in mind that the situation of the raden and he would work for the benefit of the people and not for himself okay so this anti structure or the process of liminality or the coronation process or the life cycle ritual why is it present it is only to strengthen the structure so Victor Turner tried to understand the social process okay he tried to understand symbols symbols as operators symbols as operators of social [Music] process so whereas if you have studied cord GS he studies symbols as vehicles of culture okay he studies symbols as vehicles of culture so he means that okay so through symbols they want to transmit culture from one generation to other generation but here Victor tner is not interested in Sp of culture rather he's trying to understand there is a symbol okay so again one more thing you need to understand symbol doesn't mean a sign symbol is something which can be which can be materialistic in nature or non-materialistic so it can be anything okay it can be anything okay it can be a idea it can be a thought it can be a s ritual it can be a right okay it can be an action so everything is a symbol okay and symbol is having no significance okay symbol is having no significance without a meaning being attached to it okay a symbol gains its relevance only after a meaning being attached to it if you see this these are nothing but perpendicular lines this has got no meaning it's just a sign now it becomes okay it's a sign or a symbol it becomes symbolic it becomes symbolic when you attach certain meaning to it so if you have seen this is the symbol of nausees in India okay it is ftic symbol right so because we have attach attached certain meaning to it in our culture okay so you need to understand this as well he says that symbol becomes symbolic when it is present with respect to a culture it is present in a culture and it has got certain meaning okay and at the same time he also says that we have to understand symbols as operators of social process now how is the symbol okay how is the symbol of life cycle ritual is helping for operation of social process you can see it is enabling the king to understand the experience of the Common Man and tomorrow after taking the coronation as the king he should not for get the experiences and he should not work for himself rather he should work for the people okay so this is liminality and the communitas concept discussed by the Victor Turner if you have any doubt you can comment in the comment section and we'll be trying to address it thank you very much
