The external ear consists of the auricle (elastic cartilage covered with stratified squamous epithelium) and the external acoustic meatus containing ceruminous glands that produce earwax to deter insects; the middle ear contains the tympanic membrane (composed of pars tensa and pars flaccida) and three auditory ossicles (malleus, incus, stapes) that transmit sound vibrations from the tympanic membrane to the oval window of the inner ear, with the tensor tympani (innervated by CN V3) and stapedius (innervated by CN VII) muscles modulating ossicle movement to dampen sound intensity, while the eustachian tube equalizes pressure between the middle ear and nasopharynx.
