Asteroid Bennu, a rubble pile of rock, metal, ice, and organics, originated approximately 4.5 billion years ago from the rubble of a violent collision in the early solar system; it formed from chondrules—molten rock droplets created in the protoplanetary disc around our young Sun—and has traveled through space for billions of years, eventually settling into a near-Earth orbit where NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission will retrieve a sample to study the raw ingredients of our solar system's formation.
