The Modernist and Functionalist Critique of Art Nouveau's Excess
While Victor Horta's Art Nouveau townhouses are celebrated for their organic beauty and structural innovation, they faced intense criticism from the rising Modernist movement. Critics, most notably Austrian architect Adolf Loos in his seminal essay 'Ornament and Crime,' argued that the elaborate, organic decoration of Art Nouveau was superfluous, economically wasteful, and a regression in design evolution. From this perspective, Horta's 'total work of art' approach was seen as overly controlling and elitist. Because each townhouse required highly specialized, expensive craftsmanship, the style was dismissed by functionalists as a decadent, bourgeois luxury that failed to address the pressing social housing needs of the industrial era. All the furniture is in the art nouvo style. The living room was called the music room. Ha aimed for an aesthetic harmony based on the perfect coexistence of shape, material, and color. He wanted his architecture to be like a beautiful piece of music.
This is the conservatory on the fourth floor. When Ha was asked about his artistic inspiration, he said, "From the plant, I take the stem, not the flower."
He ultimately sought to portray in his art the elegant way a stem grows.
