Camera movements include panning, tilting, tracking shots, boom shots, crane shots, and aerial shots. Shot distances range from extreme long shots to extreme close-ups, with depth of field generally increasing as shot scale decreases. The transition from silent to sound cinema affected soft focus techniques, and the 1950s saw Hollywood adopt widescreen formats (1.85:1 to 2.55:1) to compete with television, replacing the original Academy ratio (1.33:1).
