Womanhouse (1972) was a six-week feminist art installation in Los Angeles where Judy Chicago, Miriam Shapiro, and their students transformed 17 rooms of a house into an environmental art piece to explore and reveal the female experience through consciousness-raising, theater performances, and role-playing, demonstrating how art can serve as a tool for social change by making visible the longings, fears, and dreams of women in domestic life.
Womanhouse: Feminist Art Installation & Consciousness-Raising (1972)
Added:for six weeks during 1972 all 17 rooms of this house in Los Angeles were transformed into an environmental art piece Judy Chicago Mariam Shapiro and their students from the California Institute of the Arts used consciousness relations to search out and reveal the female experience and to produce theater pieces which they wrote and performed they explored these new feelings about themselves and about women's role in the home until they created before the eyes of the public the longings fears and dreams women have as they cook so wash and iron their lives away [Music] [Music] [Music] Linda come here look at how beautiful a melon where do I talk to Marilyn a male this egg in the pan over here [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the night women house closed the artist gathered for one final session where each one related with women house meant to her yes I can see I just feel good alright does enough Sparkle I think Sparkle Judy's has you know and like we wanted to do something role-playing so we had all these costumes so Nancy was all your mom and it's ridiculous white wig and a belly dancer outfit I'd always been sort of uptight about my body and I'd never pictured myself in that role I was like this person got my body here she is the one and only I'm really not the manager pit tonight girls you should have seen dancing shaking it up you know it took him an hour to mop up the floor with all those guys drooling all over it was like supposed to be from our real lives you know the story of our real life so take it to an extreme you know and like all those feelings I was always so afraid of really a fiendish Tuffy you know and you know be like so you know I'm a lesbian and everyone's gonna say I'm a dyke you know and there's stereotype and blah blah blah you know and then like I was just telling Jenny other day that somehow like every week getting dressed up and putting that wig on and putting makeup on it I have never tweeze my eyebrows in my entire life and I've always wondered what I would look like if I did my eyebrows but I always thought the pain wasn't worth it you know and then I found myself like getting into wearing all these really heaven in clothes my friend so I feel like everybody [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you know I've been raised with my ideas and sure they're different from female ideas I don't know how and they were really talk to a girl about these things I don't know why I just never have and this is the first time ever I've wanted to but most of the girls I've ever tried to talk to about these things and it was you know like there's no reason there's no way they could talk to me about and in coming to the group I have never in my life been with people I mean really been with people and it's very hard for me we had the kitchen consciousness-raising up you know in the beginning of the of the house and that really raised by consciousness grateful how it was to work with people like I said if ever I got working so hard into my own little corner you know come and grab me hug me or something gave me anything get me out of it because that was one thing that this group has given to me was the fact of the community feeling a feeling that I did belong and I was it was my right position to be myself [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] movie scream dream of eternal romance moonlight in the afternoon bells ringing and angels singing you know a husband a family a lifetime of undying love wow man like wait a minute you know you know I really like you really got in gotta get to love man you know I think you got to get into love and like gotta get him to like a vibes you know like tune in tune in to the universe like my body belongs to the universe that's what I do when I get to Sky and eternity on the ass it's so heavy like acid just really like turn me on he had this jacket you know you shouldn't see this jacket oh it had black shiny leather on it said he's not see crosses you know and I had had this skull in the back we know it's really beautiful really that jacket was really all right you know and like like everybody really thought that jacket and he let me wear it you could like then everybody would know I was just check you know one time we had this party somebody brought this really good stuff really heavy doping like somebody brought out this big bag of red you know like and like being we're all taking these like somebody somebody asked me if I wanted to take some react you know like I said no man like you know I got into revs at this time you know take it off my mic you know I thought they wanted to get dance or something I was just falling with it you know I'm like really into it you know like they put me in the shower and they started washing me and like they were like grabbing me and everything in like I didn't know I don't know it was cold you know and like you're this guy like he pulled back my head you know I couldn't see and in the water was running in my face and everything and like somebody brought up like a handful of reds and they put him in my mouth he'd pull my nails up and it stuck him in there and I couldn't breathe and I was and he's choking you know and I had to swallow man like all those Rams you know like they just like it came out really fast after that you know and they I don't know what happened like I was so stoned you know no sign of it like the next thing I knew they put me on this bed and like I I don't know they all started like getting out on top of me and like taking turns following me and stuff and was really weird night I couldn't move [Music] it went on for a long time in I don't know I just I think that I just I guess I just passed out or something man it's like like I woke up a long time after that and like everybody was gone you know a knight like they'd taken all my clothes man and like they'd even taken it jacket you know like I never did find that jacket again you know and I never saw my old man after that I heard he got busted or something you know like I don't know you you just you just gotta stay above that [ __ ] you know you got a really like let it get to you you know you're gonna keep putting up goodbye [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] it makes me feel proud kind of pride in what women can do and showing themselves and I think in that sense it's kind of a it makes an impact I think everybody who sees it has to realize that women are not just for imitation men you know they have something specific to say and then special to do and I think it's very nice I think a bit more interesting a poor man to come see it are you an artist now I'm here I guess the thing is it just that's the kind of thing you hide another you know behind a closed door and just the idea of seeing something is that I only open in public having other people standing there looking at it with me even though I expected to see it it was shocking [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] wait a minute the administration bathroom that's a statement that's real difficult to understand for a man or maybe it's very obvious it's one of the other team a very difficult understand abrasion what did you think of it I mean if it what was your reaction to it then the lady had a problem or a lot of friends all right before I you being part of this this is the problem women is still perceived sting that's interesting I had no idea I'm actor I related to my experience of what she really had a mess on her hands there's that what she's saying well I mean in other words you felt it was very messy and you didn't know that it was that mess no no I took it literally yeah which I suppose I should yeah but what's my first reaction literal interpretation actions she must've had a huge party a lot of menstruating friends or she had it was a very heavy floor yeah well obviously that's not a literal level or maybe that's you say I'm a symbolic level it may be a way of saying the question why it was expensive [Music] it's not a and the house it's in a way that makes is it right no no it's wonderful [Laughter] [Applause] [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] you know [Music] [Music] - I need to Oh must I you know sometimes I wish to receive I know my can't was made to see my cut has an opening in the middle therefore I must [Applause] no if you keep this making on me [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] I houses simply tremendous it's the most imaginative humorous phallic [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay so then you know so I showed the partner I'm just gonna push through and I just love you know the right and I fit myself into each of your legs and I get pushed through and then I love waiting and then I hear these mothers like posh I need my body goes like this and I felt like I was a baby born from that I can still feel my mother calling me you know sandy you know I felt what it was good that we were all just one thing and throughout the whole birth pieces we're one thing if we're one figure or what you sounded it really works and the way I felt about the whale was that in a way it was like this kind of call or this kind of just don't have like calling up like the gods or or calling to the God or or something like this kind of thing would take over it was just it was so wonderful it was the most it was really orgasmic if I see bread when it was well every time before we perform the go through this kind of a ritual and we all get together upstairs and we get in this huddle you know and we all like give each other this kind of a pep talk and we'd all talk about how where you are going to wail from the voices of all the women throughout the centuries and all the pain and all the ecstasy and all the feelings that they ever felt [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] yes Oh no munafiq with a girl in the girl girl in the furrow and the girl was [Applause] [Music] Oh ah waiting waiting for someone to come in waiting for someone to hold me will they think is this is it valid for me to spend my time doing this shouldn't I rather be reading some more essays on feminism shouldn't I be doing this shouldn't I be doing that you know I mean you know it's really really hard yes very it's very difficult to say invest in your own in other words for example I'm drawing again you know I did a whole bunch of small drones and the other day yesterday I started the first drawing from the small joints the next step and so like I spent an hour going through this thing first I made it 15 like it's in a min 20 min 20 SEC my 15 minute because what it was was it was like I couldn't get inside and connect it to what I wanted now so then I said okay now stop what do I want independence you know like all these things about how it looks on the page and what it's supposed to be over an hour shows what I want okay I want 15 by 15 that's what I wanted [ __ ] 15 by 15 okay now every time every decision it's that kind of process of having to go stop the whole process of the outside and him and her and them and art and this and that and get it safe what do I want what do I want what do I want [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] desert of dishes laughter wish it please excuse the mess I'm still trying to set myself [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]
