Nuclear weapons have been used and threatened repeatedly throughout history, with the United States dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 despite Japan's ongoing surrender negotiations, and subsequently threatening nuclear war on over 40 occasions since then; the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty requires nuclear powers to pursue good-faith negotiations toward complete disarmament (Article 6), yet the US has consistently failed to fulfill this commitment, creating widespread international frustration and driving proliferation pressures, making grassroots activism and sustained popular pressure essential for achieving nuclear abolition.
