China's Yangshan Deep Water Port, located 32 kilometers offshore in the East China Sea, represents a monumental feat of modern engineering that addresses the critical challenge of accommodating ever-larger post-Panamax container ships. Built on an artificial island using the Sea Dragon dredge to move 3,000 million cubic meters of mud, the port features 50 ship berths, 13 state-of-the-art STS-40 cranes capable of lifting 4 containers at once, and is connected to Shanghai by the world's second-longest ocean bridge (Donghai Bridge). This $8 billion project enables Shanghai to process 25 million containers annually, transforming it from the world's third-largest to second-largest container port and securing China's dominance in global maritime trade.
