Small businesses can find large prime contractors for subcontracting work by using government resources like the SBA directory, DHS prime contractor lists, and NAICS codes on USA Spending.gov to identify companies winning contracts over $650,000 that are required to subcontract at least 35% of their work to small businesses.
A Contractor's Guide to Finding Large Primes for Subcontracting
Added:[Music] hello everyone this is Abraham again coming to you from the G contractors Association reporting a training session I'm live here with Sean and we're doing a training session on how to find large contractors or large primes to do subcontracting work for so Sean has a small business and we're a veteran owned small business we're trying to find large companies in the governor space so that he can do some subcontracting work for them so without further Ado I'm going to dive right on in and uh start the training here so the first thing we're going to do is we're going to go and go use our software that we already have it's called G fasttrack.com and so we're going to go to the site and we're going to hit log in we're going to log into the site and we're going to go to the portion that talks about relationship promotion and so we're going to go to this section that says subcontracting with large primes subcontracting with large primes and large contractors so we're going to go here and there's many different places how you can find large companies uh Sean and I already did a quick run through but I'm going to show everybody briefly again as a reminder for Sean and everybody else that's watching this training video here here so I'm going to use the SBA directory for primes by state so this is one the first one I'm going to click on this link and it's going to take me to the SBA site and when a large company wins a contract over $650,000 large companies are required to subcontract work to small businesses so this is one of the reason why we're you know the the SBA puts out this list here so we're going to go down to Georgia we're going to click on Georgia and we're going to go and find some companies so some of the companies you know as a Sean because your company is a low voltage where you do c 5 C 6 and all the different uh you know wiring um then a construction company will be a good teaming partner or good Prime to subcontract work to you so this is one company and if if they don't have a website or email here you can easily copy the company name and then go to Google and just pull it up on Google because these are large companies so you'll be able to find them easily just by the company name and said boom here we are AC Construction Company there here's a phone number you can come and get their contact information right here for what we're doing with Shan's company we're actually going to do a invitation to have coffee with sha so that he can talk about his company and build relationship with them that way so we're not looking for a immediate uh contract track we're looking for relationship because that's where the ultimate value is so you have to think from your company's perspective as a what's the lifetime value of one large primes that subcontracting work to you and for some company the lifetime value might be a 100,000 for some large companies the lifetime value with your company might be a million some might be five million so so we're building relationship for long-term purposes and that's that's who they want to work with anyway way it's companies that understand that uh you know that they're going to do long-term construction work with you so so that's one way so we can kind of go down the list here on the SBA list you know obviously you know AT&T will be good because they're a telecommunications company and Shan your company is a telecommunication company so this is one way so I'm going to go back to our to our training software here G FasTrack and so we can also use any of these other places we can go to to the DHS and go to their list of prime and this is their list of prime here so C centure is one company Alliance science and you know we can kind of come here and see what they do application integration to see if there's a good fit and some of them may not be a good fit some of them are in areas that completely is different from what you're doing so so Bae can be a good fit cuz they do cyber security database management all of that requires uh wiring and it equipment this you know this would be a good one this uh cyber this may be Communications and data installation data distribution this will be a perfect company so Boeing will be good boo Allen will be good your computer equipment all these are it companies so so shine for your company these will all be good company and here's their um contact information their contact name the small business liaison officer this person is also known as the diversity manager so Ashley Burton will be the person that you want to reach out to and you can go to their website doing business with uh Booze Allen Hamilton right here and find out more about who to engage there as well by going to their link here so I'm going to click on that uh so here for Booze Allen if you're going to do work with them they actually have a registration portal so you want to come in here and you know register to be a vendor or subcontractor to them and this is part of the process here so so that's one way so we I've shown you two ways you know one is through the SBA one is directly with the agency uh to the company itself that's doing the work I'm going to show you a third way uh this third way here we have to go to the census site so I'm going to click on uh go to the census site it's census.gov naics this is where we go find your next code and so we're going to come here under next code search we're going to put in here Telecom communication and search and so so here's one telecommunication equipment and wiring this is one your n code here 238210 so that's one I'm going to come back here and search construction and we're going to find your n code for construction click search there's a whole bunch of construction obviously we're going to go and find 2 three you know any one that will work but we're going to find a key one here so you know two you know 236 210 will be a good one uh 236 220 is also a good one this is for uh commercial and Industrial you know construction so so and they do many types these next codes you know because the Govern we're going to need these next code to track and find the large companies that's that that we want to team with so I want to come down here the next website I want to go to is usaspending.gov and now that I found your next code which is the 238210 I'm going to go to 236 210 as well so I'm going to come in here under USA Spain I'm going click on Advanced Data search and once I'm here I want to go and check 2015 contracts for the fiscal year and then I want to come down here further and I want to go to the NEX Co section and I come to the next Co I want to go to 23 under the section the first two digits 2 three I'm going to click on that and then a new era is going to pop up so I'm going to click on the 236220 which is the commercial and institutional building construction these are the general contractors that I want to team with and wiring installation contractors 238210 so I'm going to check on that so we're going to get our top to NES Co here and then I'm going to go back and hit submit click on the submit button now that we have this pulled up oh you know what we did we forgot to just narrow down to Georgia so last year under those two nakes code the government awarded one I mean1 billion under those two nakes code but now I'm going to go back and narrow it down and those under that they subcontracted out to eight billion dollars went to small businesses kind of like your Sean so that's about 80% subcontracting so that's a good sign so we want the company that's winning contract we want it to be just in Georgia so I'm going to go to Georgia and then I'm going to go back to NES code and do that part again and two commercial and electrical and wiring and I'm going hit submit okay so that's a little bit better here so what I do is I narrow down to just companies large companies or companies in Georgia that are winning under those two industries NES codes so they awarded $27 million and 139 million was subcontracted out to companies once I'm here if I want to find company information about these companies here like Archer you know Archer a West um I can come and find ACC if I want to find out more information about ACC I click on the contract n to this is the award contract number here I'm going click on that and it's going to pop up here and I can come and find out more more information so this is a uh definitive contract construction of Barracks buildings so I can tell exactly what type of project this is I can find out the place of performance it's in Columbia South Carolina and I can find about the contractor information so this company has is in Augusta Georgia and I can find out the contractor characteristic so this company is a $44 million company and they have 48 employees and so I know that because they're a they're 44 million they're considered a large company in the eyes of the government and so they're going to have to subcontract 35% of their work to small businesses at a minimum 35 so this is a good potential teaming partner so this is one way to get information about this company obviously you have their information here um but I'm going to be a little bit more strategic and so what I'm going to do is I just showed you how to find details about that company but I'm actually going to download all of the project because I want to find out which company are winning the most cont contracts that's based out of Georgia and we could do this for any state but we we're just choosing to do Georgia because uh Sean's company is based in Georgia so now that I pulled this up here I've got the Excel sheet I've got the award amount and I got the recipient company name here so now that I have the company name I can come down here and you know just highlight now Archer Weston we know that they're a large company already they're tied in with wash group so I'm going to highlight all of the contract that Archer Weston one and so that way I can get a quick view and so I'm going to come here I'm going to just highlight this here it's going to tell me how much contract that they won so they won $3 million in contracts 53 m625 million yeah yeah 625,000 53 625 so this is a good potential large company that can subw work to you so now that I found this information on this company what I want to do is I want to take their D number and I want to find out more information about this company so so this is their D's number column D is their dun's number so you can see that this is the dun's number so I'm going to copy the dun's number and I'm going to go to C and I'm going to go back to USA spending so this is one way of how you can find how much contract this company is really winning so I'm going go back to Advanced Data search I'm going to just check 2015 and I'm gonna I don't want the state of Georgia now because I want to see how much contract outside of Georgia this company is really winning so I'm going to paste the D's number here in this section here and that's all I'm going to do one year 2015 and dun's number because I want to see how much contract they won in 2015 for this one company CU I'm doing my research on this company because I want to go and build a relationship with them $53 million and so this company have done $53 million and so this is a good company to go and team with so and do some subcontracting work with so if you just want to find out more about their company obviously you can just sub award show zero that that doesn't mean anything yeah because sub award means that uh they they've actually done the sub award work themselves so this this just tells you that they're a prime contractor so so they're owned by wash group and so I click on wash group go to their site and this is their website and now that you're in here you can come you can go and see bidding opportunities they actually have work available right now that you can bid on and just kind of you know go and see what project they have I mean look at all these big project $550 million project um wow this is in New York so yeah here pay some money for that so since you're you're in Georgia I want to kind of scan down I don't see see any project in Georgia maybe anything in the South uh nothing in the South Carolina Forton okay oh yeah right here that's right so this is something that you can potentially do $65 million obviously they're going to have work for you because all these are construction project and and you want to come in here and some of them may have where you have to do uh you have to do a registration under their company and so forth most of them have that so uh so so this is one company and so now we can kind of go back to our Excel sheet and we can go find other companies for you to do work [Music] with
