The human mind operates through two distinct cognitive systems: System 1, which is fast, intuitive, automatic, and operates without conscious effort (such as recognizing emotions or perceiving threats), and System 2, which is slow, deliberate, effortful, and analytical (such as solving complex math problems). While System 1 enables quick judgments and skilled performance through accumulated experience, it is prone to systematic errors through mechanisms like substitution (answering easier questions instead of harder ones) and coherence-seeking (creating plausible stories from limited information). Expert intuition develops only in highly regular environments with immediate feedback, and subjective confidence does not reliably indicate the accuracy of judgments.
