The human brain contains a specialized region called the Right Temporo-Parietal Junction (RTPJ), located above and behind the right ear, which enables us to understand other people's thoughts, beliefs, and intentions. This brain system develops gradually throughout childhood, with children typically beginning to understand that others can have false beliefs around ages 3-5, and continuing to refine this ability into early adolescence. Research using brain scanning and Trans-Cranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has demonstrated that individual differences in RTPJ function correlate with how people judge others' actions, showing that this brain region plays a causal role in moral judgment by enabling us to consider others' mental states rather than just outcomes.
