The facial nerve (CN VII) is a mixed cranial nerve containing four major fiber types: branchiomotor fibers (controlling facial expression muscles from the principal nucleus in the pons), parasympathetic fibers (controlling lacrimation and salivation from the superior salivatory nucleus), taste fibers (from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue terminating in the nucleus of tractus solitarius), and general somatic afferent fibers (for external ear sensation connected to the trigeminal system). The nerve exits the brainstem at the ponto-cerebellar junction, travels through the internal acoustic meatus to the geniculate ganglion, then proceeds through the facial canal in the middle ear medial wall before exiting at the stylomastoid foramen. From there, it gives branches to the stapedius muscle, posterior auricular region, and enters the parotid gland where it divides into five terminal branches: temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, and cervical, supplying all facial expression muscles. Parasympathetic fibers reach their targets via the greater petrosal nerve and chorda tympani pathways, while taste fibers travel with parasympathetic fibers to the nucleus of tractus solitarius.
