Lord Louis Mountbatten (1900-1979) was a distinguished British naval officer and statesman whose remarkable career spanned over fifty years, including commanding HMS Kelly during WWII, overseeing Japan's surrender in 1945, and serving as Viceroy of India where he oversaw the partition of British India into independent India and Pakistan in 1947; despite his brilliant military career and numerous honors including the Military Order of Merit, his life ended tragically when he was assassinated by the IRA in 1979 along with his twin grandson Nicholas and Nicholas's grandmother Doreen Lady Brabourne.
