This video demonstrates a comprehensive approach to building a track-ready Scion FR-S/BRZ that prioritizes reliability and drivability over maximum horsepower. The build features a supercharged FA20 engine producing approximately 230-240 horsepower with a broad power band, enhanced cooling systems (CSF radiator and Gry oil cooler), upgraded brakes (Stop Tech 14-inch rotors with six-piston calipers), and a sophisticated suspension system (KW three-way coilovers and WiseFab grip suspension). Key modifications include a fluid damper harmonic balancer for reliability, oil system improvements (IEG baffle and pickup tube), chassis stiffening (Cusco braces), and aerodynamic components (Varys diffuser, splitter, and wing). The philosophy emphasizes that a well-tuned, reliable car with proper proportioning and cooling can outperform less refined high-horsepower builds on the track.
Scion FR-S Project Build: Full Performance Overview
Added:some of our popular videos that you guys have really enjoyed is some of the project cars in our garage so this is our F FRS project and uh I think we did a pretty good job of building this thing this car is one of the funnest cars to drive it has some of the best brakes best handling best balance of any car I've driven for any price um you know even though it's not super powerful or anything it's total blast to drive as you can see it's a whole system I think this is the right way to build one of these cars let's go ahead and take a look inside part of what makes this car so fun is the engine and we actually didn't do a whole lot the fa20 is a pretty strong motor as long as you stick within the parameters of what it can take I know a lot of the WRX guys their turbocharged can get into trouble by overstressing the bottom end but you know that's not until you pass 350 400 horsepower that the engine starts to mess up so you know we decided to not get too crazy we wanted this thing to be reliable and track drivable without spinning a whole lot uh we wanted to keep the stock bottom in so we got this uh Sprintex supercharger now this is like the smaller model it's a CB approved so technically it could be street legal if this was one of the only things on your engine or if you did all crb approved parts it makes about uh 8 PSI it's a screw type blower which is more efficient than your traditional positive displacement loob blower doesn't make a ton of horsepower I I think this thing once everything gets heat saturated uh makes about 227 to the wheels or something um it has a water to air intercooler um which helps but it's on the small side so it gets heat soaked pretty easy uh this thing makes about maybe 240 something horsepower on 91 pump gas at first but after a bunch of Dino poles it settles settles in the uh maybe high 220s low 230 range U which is fine for what it is um we did a um f FRS shootout back in the day with a lot of the tuner shops of their different F FRS and we're actually the fastest 0 to 60 time and I think we're the fastest quarter mile and we didn't have the highest peak horsepower out of all the cars but we had the broadest power band and that was due to the positive displacement Sprintex blower I mean you have Boost as soon as you step on the gas uh it's pretty responsive and it's been proven to be really reliable too so uh you know that's one of the only things we did to the engine another thing is we used a um a nameless equal length for into one header so for your naturally aspirated uh FAS this is the best header on the market it does kind of Snak around the front of the engine and it does add to some heat soak in the engine compartment like it slightly melted one of our Fran shouds even though it was thermal barrier coated I think if I was to do it again I probably would used um another header that's uh equal length but doesn't uh stick out so much in the front and is more in the heat soak Zone as a stock manifold uh might give up a couple horsepower but I'd rather have like less pain in the butt but the uh nameless if I was to build an all in a car uh that'd be probably the only thing I would run it's a really neat header um you know it kind of sneaks snakes around the front of the motor and it it looks really cool another thing we did is we used a fluid damper harmonic balancer and we actually found this to give like a like a whopping six horsepower which I was pretty surprised at so that was six horsepower of the wheels um these FAS and this this particular chassis make a pretty gnarly couple of pretty gnarly vibration Peaks and the fluid damper damps it out and you actually see a horsepower in increase now I haven't seen horsepower increases with some cars with fluid dampers but this car really responded well to it uh you can actually feel the engine is a lot smoother and when you're running at high RPM all the time it's a plus I think it's cheap insurance so uh you know if you had an F FRS I'd run that fluid damper any day other than that the engine is pretty much stock um Church Automotive did a custom tune like we found that for track driving the smog legal tune was pretty lean and we wanted it to be more conservative and safer so um we had Church do a more conservative tune uh gave us some more fuel took out some timing it didn't hurt the power at all so um you know even though it was conservative didn't hurt the power I mean this thing runs all day and doesn't have any problems at all um some of the problems these cars have though is going into limp mode on the track they get hot and the computer goes wo so uh we put a CSF radiator and a gry oil cooler with the CSF radiator and the gry oil cooler this thing you can run it hard all day and 90° plus heat uh engine doesn't go unle uh nothing gets hot um nothing even comes close to boiling over or anything and that's pretty much it for the engine I think if I wanted to keep this car some more and mess around with it uh for sure I would do a flex fuel system uh Flex Fuel so we can run the 85 uh that would probably give somewhere between 30 and 50 more horsepower um this engine's really high compression and when you put the blower on top of that uh you have to really take a lot of timing out to run a 91 safely uh at full thr for long periods of time so the um Flex Fuel will really allow you to advance more timing uh with more timing Advanced the engine will actually run cooler um it'll make a huge difference in power at least 30 horsepower with flex fuel but I'm kind of done playing with this and I don't want to mess around anymore but uh to the next owner do Flex Feel I guarantee you'll be happy now we have some Cusco braces uh to make the chassis stiffer uh Tower bar and U uh shock Tower to uh uh firewall braces we have an anti-gravity lithium battery that saves 30 lbs off the front end so it almost makes up for the weight increase that the blower did we have some HPS silicone hoses for more reliability uh these are high temp they don't oxidize for ply last a lot longer one less thing to worry about really that's about it our drivetrain is stock stock clutch stock flywheel holds up fine doesn't even come anywhere close to slipping we have a cart boy short shifter and uh stiffer shifter bushings and what I like about the cart boy shifter is it's not like super quick so you don't have to worry about messing up your sinkr but it is uh maybe about 25% shorter and it's a lot crisper and more positive in feel shifter feels really awesome but that's it nothing too complicated it's a lot faster than a uh stock FRS it's kind of like what you feel the car should have been from the factory power bands nice and wide it's a sweetheart to drive on the street uh really easy no bad characteristics and uh I mean I just really like this car it's not not like super fast like our project STI but it gets the job done with minimum fuss and minimum amount of irritating characteristics and you can run it all day um doesn't get hot now we also took care of some of the oiling issues these FAS are known to sometimes starve the bearings and uh what we did is we put a um iig oil pan baffle windage tray uh the windage tray has oneway uh flaps on it so the oil can't Splash backwards up out of the sump and it can't slash side to side uh we'll get more into the uh baffle we'll pull the pan off so you can take a look at it now we haven't really had any oiling problems we've always had plenty of oil pressure even while driving on the track but hey it doesn't hurt now uh these fa engines they've been known to uh suck the uh pi up screen into the oil pump which causes it to jam up and Kaboom with your engine on the stock pickup the screen is pressed in place but ieg's um is TIG welded so that's not going anywhere uh Subarus have also been known to uh break the uh the pickup tube off now um the FAS I don't think are going to do that because it's kind of shorter and less heavy but uh iegs is not pressed in like the stock part um it's actually uh uh TIG welded the stock part is uh pressed in and has some light brazing and it's a lot weaker now finally um the I uh pickup tube itself is bigger in diameter internally it's a straight shot and it goes into this uh cast pie piece this is all like U higher volume and less restrictive than the stock part um so this is going to cause less of a pressured depression on the oil pump so the oil pumps less look likely to cavitate and uh should flow better now uh this oil pan baffle has uh these one-way trap doors so oil can uh drop through from the engine but it can't Splash back up there this is going to keep more oil around the pickup and uh less oil going around and causing windage up by your crank for the uh EJ Motors uh this uh baffle really helps a lot to prevent oiling problems and the fa 20 it should help now I don't think the fa2 has this bad oiling problems is the EJ or the fa24 but um hey we have these going to put them in it can only help on the track so um there we go so the brakes in this car are incredible like I've driven a lot of really high performance cars and maybe the only thing that I've ever driven that stops better is a GT3 RS Porsche now these brakes are nothing to laugh about I mean this is a small pretty light car so these brakes are pretty massive for this uh size of a car this is a stop Tech system it uses a 14in rotor and the six piston caliper now this is their St caliper which is their uh I guess high-end racing caliper it has a forged body machined out to remove about 3/4 of a pound of extra weight it has a machine bridge that uh bolts on top that prevents the caliper from spreading uh that gives you a nice firmer pedal um this this caliper even though it's a race type caler has like features that make it really good for the street the most nuted thing is um dust seals now usually racing calipers don't have dust seals because they tend to catch on fire and race cars everything's rebuilt all the time and uh you know so they're not used uh but these top Tech calipers use a high temperature silicone dust seal that won't won't catch on fire unless you get them really really hot uh this allows like a long service life on the street if you chose them to run them on the street the Pistons go from a small diameter to the front and they progress to a larger in the rear uh this is done to prevent taper wear um the the Leading Edge of pads usually wears first uh no matter what the what kind of caliper it is so a lot of high-end calipers run a smaller piston in the front a medium in the middle and the large in the rear this distributes the uh forces so you're wearing the pad evenly another uh feature that makes these uh calipers somewhat streetable is they have a like a spring clip it's kind of hard to see inside but that puts tension on the pads and reduces their tendency to chatter and squeak these rotors also have uh stainless steel abutments uh where the ears of the pad Engage The caliper uh these prevent the um backing plates of the pads from digging into the softer aluminum to cause sticking and stuff uh that's a feature that a lot of high-end calipers have the rotors are 14 in uh they're 32 mm thick and they have uh venting the venting on stop Tech rotors is cfd designed to uh get maximum flow the rotors float on these uh forged aluminum hard anodized hats the hard anodizing helps prevent corrosion now um you know like you can see uh they look pretty new for the most part even though they've been on the car like probably eight years at least and they've seen uh track usage uh the floating rotors um help reduce the chance of uh brake knockback and they also prevent cone Distortion of the rotor as uh the rotors get really hot when you have like one piece rotors the outer face tends to run cooler than the inner so the rotor distorts like a cone and and you uh lose uh brake feel because uh when you step on the brakes the the rotor gets stretched back uh more in the normal shape also you get a weird tilting padwar when you have a floating rotor the rotor is kind of free to move the heat dissipation is uh equal on both sides and you have a nice uh parallel breaking surface a cool thing about stop teex is their floating rotors are preloaded with Inc canel cone washers uh you can't see them they're on the backside but uh this allows float but but it the rotor isn't like free to move like total race oriented floating rotors uh the rotor you can actually shake it and uh when you're driving around the street sometimes you hear like this chinging noise that's pretty annoying but the stop techs um aren't going to do that because they have some preload but the front brakes are uh pretty pretty excellent let me talk go and talk about the rear brakes now the rear brakes in this car are also pretty pretty huge um they're 13 1 12 in in diameter they use uh stop teex Str 22 rear caliper this is a two piston caliper um that's all you need in the rear cuz um typically in cars like this they do 80% of the braking on the front wheels when they're totally under braking like the front rotor the rear rotor is full floating but it also uses those inconel anti noise washers um the parking brake is integral into the hat so this is a uh hard anodized aluminum hat with an integral uh parking brake drum inside and you get rid of the heavy cast iron drum uh so these brakes probably overall for all all the way around probably take about uh 30 lbs of rotating weight off the car so one thing that stop deck does that's cool is they match the uh size I guess surface area of the front and rear calipers they try to match the stock hydraulic proportioning between the front and the rear so what that means when you're using your stock hydraulic system and stock master cylinder you still have a nice firm pedal uh the pedal is not long like a lot of big big brake kits um the other thing is when you have equal hydraulic proportioning uh your your proportioning valve works normally your abs Works normally your traction control works normally and your vehicle stability control works normally a lot of other big brake kits don't pay such close attention to the front and rear proportioning and a lot of these um electronic nannies and OEM systems don't work right but not stop Tech um so for a street car that's running the factory hydraulic system stoptech is one of the brakes that we recommend the most now I was talking about how good these brakes work like we did some testing at Irwindale Raceway and this car was consistently stopping stop after stop after stop from 60 M an hour and about 92 ft now that's pretty amazing uh anytime you get under 100 ft it's pretty incredible like you're typical super high performance car is usually something like 105 110 ft but I mean I think this is one of the shortest UH 60 to Z stopping distances I've ever heard of for any car so that's the brakes let's get on to the suspension so one of the most awesome things about this car is the suspension now we're in the back we're going to talk about the rear suspension first um suspension usually centers around what kind of coilover you run and we're running one of the best off-the-shelf coilovers for this car I mean my opinion it's the best off-the-shelf coilover for this car it's a kws three-way Club sport so it has three-way adjustable valving uh you have high and low speed compression and rebound all adjustable independently now this gives you tremendous flexibility in setting up the car um you might want to go to our YouTube channel and see our video on how to adjust three-way shocks because you know with more knobs I see people screw cars up but I think our video makes how to adjust these things really straightforward now the KW um three-way club sports they have remote reservoirs um the compression Adjusters are here at the bottom like you have highspeed compression and low speed compression uh the shock body is stainless steel so it doesn't corrode so you're never going to have your spring seat stick uh it has also has a uh plastic line stainless spring seat so that's never going to stick uh like like if you've own coilovers before you know the body gets corroded the threads get crusty and then the uh spring seat SE sticks and you're kind of screwed uh but a KW will never do that to you we're running 10 kgs in the rear uh it seems kind of stiff but we're actually running the shocks kind of in board so uh you know you get more motion ratio so you need to go higher in the spring rate overall I think these uh three-way club sports are like really Advanced and they're kind of like kws on one of their top-of-the-line shocks that are both track drivable and streetable now the way we have these things adjusted this thing probably rides just as smooth or smoother than stock on the street but you have all the control for um you know highspeed driving on the tracks with sticky tires and all that uh we don't even touch the adjusters between Street and track um which is you know speaks volume for how how good these shocks work the rest of the suspension we're running wise Fab's grip suspension setup now everyone knows about wisefab and they how they make pretty good stuff for drifting but a lot of people don't know that they also make another suspension system for uh grip and that's what we have so you have a CNC Billet uh knuckle assembly and it's a drop knuckle assembly and it moves the wheel up in the knuckle about an inch and a half half so you get an inch and a half of lowering without losing any wheel travel at all that's one of the reasons why this car rides so good um the knuckle uh every single pivot is in uh double Shear so what that means is uh here's your um your arm with your spherical bearing and it's supported on both ends now typically like on stock cars and a lot of other suspension like most of the things are in single shear and uh double Shear is way stronger and it's a best practice for race cars and all that and with wise faab every single um bearing element is in double Shear which is kind of a neat touch all the arms and all that are uh fabricated they all have spherical bearings for uh no slop or anything um the motion ratio of the shock can be adjusted in 1 to three positions the outmost position uh gives you the most stiffness and the least amount of travel the inboard most gives you the most travel and the uh least amount of stiffness it's because of the motion ratio so the wib setup is adjustable for camber and toe the toe's adjustable by turning the toe link the camber uh is adjustable by using shims on the uh upper control arm and the knuckle you can also adjust the spherical bearings to some degree uh adjust your track withd and your your toe settings so overall uh we found this setup to work really well uh some of the early versions We had uh we had some things Bend but uh the later versions are much stronger and uh we haven't had any problems with that yet for sway bars for running uh White Lines three-way adjustable um they have uh three different holes the ones that go toward the rear of the car or to make the bar stiffer toward the front of the car it makes the bar softer the bar seems like it's a pretty small diameter but when you look the moment arm that the end links have on the bar is really short so the uh bar has a lot of Leverage on the suspension for its size now these F frs's have really weak Factory sway bar amounts and the white line has taking this into consideration so they have these uh tubular braces that go to the lower control arm and the sway arm mount it's a big tubular brace and that prevents uh everything from flexing or in know worst case tearing off the car so that really improves the sway bar Effectiveness and um I think uh you ought to use them for the end links the white line bars use uh ball joints now these have no give and they're totally sealed for long life and quietness we also have um white line bushings in the rear crossmember and the differential so we have white lines race bushings which are the hardest durometer urethane holding the subframe in place and we also have their hard bushings holding the differential in place so this keeps everything from moving around um you know like your stock subframe can move around probably up to like almost an inch I would say 3/4 under maximum load that can make the handling really sloppy and the white line stuff really stops that from happening uh the differential can uh you know like move back and forth quite a bit and that can cause wheel hop that's really hard on your whole drivetrain like your transmission your drive shaft and your rear end so hard bushings keep that true and what's interesting is that even though the bushings are hard and they don't have all the air gaps like stock we didn't notice any increase in noise or or or ride discomfort going to the white line part so I think it's something that's you know everybody should consider for the differential we're running the stock Factory limited slip and the stock final drive uh it seems to suit the characteristics of our supercharged engine and the factory diff seems to work really good in grip driving for the amount of horsepower we have now if we had more horsepower we're drifting we'd probably prefer a uh clutch type limited slip like a Os geekin or something uh but you know for grip driving this power level the factory if seems to be working really well um now Flex is always bad for um handling too uh the more the chassis flexes the less sensitive the car is to suspension adjustment and if the body's acting like a undammed spring uh your ride comfort and your um suspension Effectiveness goes down so we added a lot of uh cusos braces like you can see uh one of the braces from the front of the subframe the lower control Mount is right here uh we have other Cusco braces in the trunk we have another one of their braces that goes from the uh the subframe mount to the subframe Mount that kind of triangulates the subframe but overall um you know I think we have a really good suspension uh in the rear um I mean this thing handles incredible like it has way more handling capability than the engine has power uh more handling uh more brakes and the engines like all right but uh you know this is a very easy car to drive fast so our front suspension is equally as trick as our rear I like the rear we have a Weiss faab they're a grip suspension for this chassis and uh it it has a bunch of cool features uh one of it is the CNC machine Billet front knuckle uh everything is in double Shear so uh all the spherical bearings are supported top and bottom one one good feature is you can adjust the amount that you can move the strut in board um it has like this Billet piece that bolts to the top of the knuckle which allows you to set the uh strut in board on this car that's an advantage because it enables you to run a much larger tire without the danger of hitting the strut so we we have it pretty far in board now when you do that that increases the motion ratio on the strut itself so uh we're running a pretty stiff 14 kg front spring uh because the motion ratio is almost 0.5 so um in order to like not be super soft in the fr front that's what we had to do um the other cool thing about wisefab is uh you could adjust the caster and the uh wheelbase and your cam by screwing these sphericals in and out now what we did is uh since we're running some wide Victory function fenders we wanted to space the the front track out to uh get wheel well clearance and uh also to get a wire front track I mean that's one of the tricks I like to do is to set my front track as wide as possible through the suspension not using spacers now that uh helps uh reduce under steer which is important on the front engine car um the lower control arm is a Billet CNC machine Billet aluminum like the knuckle um it has these uh tyod ends that um uh allow for uh you know screwing out more without uh losing your enough of your thread overlap so this can accommodate a wider track um also you can adjust the bump steer to a degree by uh messing around with the misalignment shims uh this car does have a pretty good bump steer uh from the factory and the Weiss faab allows good alignment of everything to keep that good bump steer um one of the things that I did that maybe other people that don't have the suspension maybe haven't thought of is I reduced a lot of the anti-dive so I uh spaced the front of the control arm uh down now um getting rid of the anti-dive helps the car um like Trail Brak and turn in at the same time with less under steer and uh I prefer to control the dive with the dampers and springs and not have that uh kinematic am dive CU that kind of binds the suspension up under braking which I feel can lead to under steer and interfere with the driver try to transfer weight around um so you can do that by uh changing the M alignment spacers and uh making custom spacing and and things like that so you know we took out a lot of the anti diive that's uh I guess one of moto iq's cool tricks um we have these r ing uh front braces now this braces the front of the uh lower control arm Pivot Point to the chassis like stock has these braces and they're really kind of limpy but the racing one is big and probably like four times stiffer at least I bet I I I feel that this really helps uh with the rigidity of the front and the overall feel of the car um we also have a wh line um two-way adjustable front sway bar um and their ball joint in Lings now this gets rid of a lot of the play and everything in the sway bar uh it sits in urethane bushings it's about uh 4 mm bigger than stock which equates to about maybe a 60% increase in overall stiffness um we usually have it in the soft hole and we don't bother to mess around with it too much we mostly do any of our tuning with the rear sway bar um so being a mcferson strut the front suspension is kind of straightforward but uh we had our tweaks widening the front track and reducing some of the anti-dive um I mean this thing HS incredible like it has zero under steer even when you hook it into a turn now we have a Cusco ladder brace here it's underneath this panel but it TI in the uh back of the subframe to the chassis and the lower control arm mounts so it's a big old piece that really increases stiffness I think that helps the overall handling um so I think that's it with the suspension and the brakes and uh let's go check out the rest of the car so no track car would be complete without paying a lot of attention to the arrow and uh and this car we had to be kind of careful cuz we don't have that much horsepower so we had to be uh really cognizant about not adding to the drag too much uh you know like this isn't like a big Power unlimited time time attack car it's a uh Street drivable uh track day fun sort of car so we had to do it scientifically and correctly so we had help from the guys at Ferris engineering and we have their full system on this car now this system is designed using cfd or uh computational fluid dynamics it's a way to model the arrow of the car without um having to use a wind tunnel and all that so Varys uses cfd to do all their modeling um they digitize the whole car add their uh proposed bits and CAD then they do uh Reflow analysis then they build prototype pieces and do some physical testing uh with floes toughs and even some manometers to confirm that their cfd is accurate then they go and make the parts so the first part you're probably uh looking at is the diffuser here now um the diffuser is the right angle like you see a lot of people that try to make their own diffusers but usually what I see is the angle is too Steep and uh a diffuser um generally unless it's uh you know about 10 to 12 deges the angle here you get flow Detachment turbulence drag and the diffuser doesn't help that much but the rarest one is at the right angle uh it has these uh vertical Stakes which kind of act like Vortex generators to help keep the flow uh attached all the way through here and the size the angle the strakes and the curvature here are all optimized via cfd so this contributes to down Force probably doesn't make any drag probably makes less drag than stock um these parts here are like flow correctors for the diffuser now um they help clean up some of the turbulence around the rear suspension uh you could still access the rear suspension so if you wanted to adjust the shocks or do your alignment or if the car is jacked up and everything's drooping uh there there's clearance uh this maybe hurts the aerodynamic slow but hey this isn't a uh prototype or anything uh and these things really help get the air straight going into the diffuser there's also sufficient venting to allow cooling of the exhaust system and uh of your differential a lot of people when they build their own own stuff they block off all the air flow then they have a problem with overheating the diff having that lock up on the track that's not going to happen here now we we have a remark exhaust uh this was a good mix of not too loud and a low back pressure uh we we really liked it we had another exhaust before it was super loud and that made this car kind of embarrassing on the street cuz man it was loud but the remark exhaust is reasonably quiet um and it doesn't get on your nerves when you're driving to the track um so there's a a lot of cooling clearance for the exhaust the differential uh Varys also has a um another bottom panel here by the transmission uh this integrates with the stock panels um from the factory they're underneath the motor and uh few feet back from it so for all practical purposes this car is practically a flat bottom uh there's nothing that really hangs down that causes too much turbulence so you get good air flow to your diffuser um we we're also using varys's side skirts uh they have a little um like a Spillway on the side um this prevents air from coming off the roof down the sides of the car uh going curling under the car and uh screwing with the diffuser flow so the side skirts aren't just s skirts but they also have a little uh Dam to kind of block the uh underflow um even more um let's go go to the front of the car and I can tell you about what's going on there so the front aerodynamics is really critical ver makes a front splitter but uh we had already made our own uh Brian conel from after hours actually built this for us and it's a marine plywood covered with h carbon with some carbon toe in the front to reinforce it this is actually attached to the chassis so it's really strong what the splitter does is it um prevents air that's being uh decelerated from the front uh and building up static pressure from just curling under the car it actually acts like a trap and catches some of that stagnation pressure and turns it into down Force now splitter creates downforce without adding that much drag um if this was like some time attack car we would have made it bigger but uh we wanted to to not drag on everything on the street so it's about maybe 5 in Long uh generally um if you're trying to make your own splitter like maybe 4 in from the Leading Edge of the front of the car uh is pretty much uh where most of the gains are made um you know beyond that sort of diminishing returns uh it's also important to block all the air leaks between the front and the splitter like we have a uh blocker panel here and it's also sealed up with weather strip um you don't want any leakage cuz even like a small 16th or an eighth of an inch Gap can reduce your splitter Effectiveness by 50% so plug those air leaks the splitter also makes your air flow through your radiator and cooler and all that stuff uh more efficient um you know like we we have a venet um carbon hood here this is a save on Hood it has a vent this prevents the pressure from building up in front of the engine so the air going out the radiator has a place to go and it comes out of the hood and goes up over the car um that helps reduce front lift as well uh we're running verusus uh canards and their stagnation plates this is part of the arrow kit you know it's possible to add a lot of drag with these but with cfd Varys um figures out the size the shape and the best place to put it on the car um so what the kards are doing is it's adding some a little bit of Newtonian downforce but it's also creating a Vortex to prevent air from curling under the car it's not really intuitive but you can see it in the cftd um you can go to varys's website and look at all the cfd output for this whole uh Arrow kit and they tell you to lift to drag and um you know how well this stuff is really working with uh data the stuff is simple it makes a pretty big difference you know it even looks cool you know like a lot of people do this stuff for showc car stuff our stuff is all uh for function and it's been proven on the track works pretty good doesn't increase drag too much and uh you know it's kind of a win-win thing for the front of the car we're running Victory function wide fenders they're 20 mm wider than stock to allow wider front tires and they have some cool Arrow features one of them is they have this venting here uh this prevents pressure build up in the wheel wells and reduces drag uh the vent is really generous and lets a lot of air escape from directly in back of the tire and some residual air down here we're also running their Fender vents so any air that pressurizes up further in the wheel well can be vent it out here um so this reduces drag and also reduces lift on the front now when you look at the ver side skirt there's a neat feature here you see how it juts out um this is so it comes as close to the tire as possible and it kind of recovers some of the pressure that the uh Spinning Wheel generates um you know this little lip actually can make a pretty big difference now I've experimented with this kind of feature on time attack cars and it totally improved the amount of front grip believe it or not and uh varis has done this with cfd verification um the fender venting uh I've done this on some other time attack cars and the drivers reported it's a feelable difference more front grip and less under steer so all this stuff um probably reduces lift more than makes down Force but it doesn't add any drag it probably like has less drag by relieving the pressure ENT trapment in the wheel well so one of the most obvious Arrow parts of any car is the rear wing and um you know ours is no different uh we used the carbon fiber cognition Wing we had picked cognition because you know at the time when we built this car most wings were mostly for show but cognition actually did some cfd study when coming out with their air foil um size and they also had some data how the wing would perform now um we knew this Wing was slightly too big for the amount of power this car has but um you know like at the time there wasn't a whole bunch of truly functional Wings on the market so this maybe makes a little bit more drag than is optimal for this level of power but um the wing really helps makes a huge difference um Brian cono of after hours built these Wing mounts uh we didn't want the wing too high um probably put a little bit less than level of the with the roof from what I know now I probably would have made it a couple inches lower but um you know the wing is up here in clean air not uh turbulent air uh works really well it's really adjustable has a lot of holes uh we we run the wing like really trimmed out for minimal drag and that's because this Wing is on the edge are being too big um but uh it's pretty I don't know what could I say it's a wing it works well and it's a engineered Wing not one of those cosmetic ones I think a really cool thing we did is we wanted to have this Wing mounted safely on our save on trunk but still be able to open the trunk so we had to do a bunch of extra things normally the best way to mount the wing is to make some chassis mounts uh and go all the way through the trunk lid um and actually build the mounts into the body of the car uh this is the safest most secure way because these Wings can generate a few 100 lbs of downforce it would just normally tear a carbon trunk lid right off or even like a stock trunk lid but we wanted to have a working trunk so uh Brian K after hours did some really cool things for us to be able to have a fully functional trunk uh first off is he made these positive bumps stops so when the wing has the full Arrow loading uh the sturdy Wing Mount presses right on here so the uh load is going through the metal hinges and and these uh sturdy bump stops uh this prevents from uh this trunk lid from being overstressed um there's also maybe about 50 to 100 lbs of uh drag load wanting to yank the wing backwards so what Brian did is he added the a bunch of layers of reinforcing carbon and actually molded the nut shirts that the wing attaches to into this thick carbon layer I mean this is probably like I don't know 10 PES of carbon in epoxy this really beefs up this part of the wing um you can see it on both sides um finally uh what he did is he also added these Arrow catches um and he built a big metal reinfor forcement to spread out the load but these Arrow catches here mount to the body and they also provide a really stiff uh surface so the carbon trunk lid doesn't just tear off now we've seen these things um you know like deck lid mounted uh Wings we seen them tear the trunk Lids off deck Lids off we've seen a few crashes caused by this too where the wing tears off and you suddenly lose your down Force in a high-speed turn so with all these precautions this isn't going to happen to us and the uh full volume of the trunk just about is fully usable so I hope you like this content um we're going to be featuring more of our project cars around here uh this is one of our favorite ones um it's also for sale um I hate to let this go but hey we got to move on to new stuff keep on generating the content this is a great car um if you wanted to do that Sr or if you wanted to do that FR cup time attack series you have a highly competitive car right here you wouldn't even need to do anything to it um it's a turnkey ready to go uh this car has also been at the SEMA show twice and actually even won a car show um we beat out a one of those hella flush kind of websites with their show car with a car that actually works so that was something we're kind of proud of anyway um I hope you you like this um if you want to read more about it go to Moto iq.com go to our project car section there's a whole bunch of articles in detail about every single thing we did to this car um there's a lot of other technical content on Moto iq.com go there hunt around look at some articles look stuff up there's thousands of articles that you could actually peruse there there um if you like our cool merch uh we have a web store uh you can get our merch shirts hoodies um we also have car parts that helps fund our content uh so just selling this car if you're interested in buying the car we'll put links in the description uh we'll we'll entertain any reasonable offer but don't offer anything below 25k it'll just go in the trash but anything reasonable we'll consider if you want us to do some stuff in your car or build you a motor uh on Moto iq.com there's a garage service link click on that fill out the form we'll get back to you um and that's it I hope you enjoyed this and I'll talk to you next time
