Global governance refers to the collective efforts of states, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations to identify, understand, and address worldwide problems that transcend national borders and exceed the problem-solving capacities of individual nations, such as poverty, environmental pollution, economic crises, terrorism, pandemics, and climate change; this system operates through a multi-layered decision-making process involving subnational, national, and global levels, with key institutions like the United Nations serving as facilitators for international cooperation and providing frameworks for addressing transboundary challenges that no single nation can resolve alone.
Global Governance Explained: The Role of the UN | Contemporary World
Added:good morning class welcome to our class on the contemporary world today we'll be talking about global governance our topic today global governance is the last part of our unit on the structures of globalization we've already discussed uh introduction to globalization then we moved on to the global economy international trade market integration and global governance but before that let me first give you a question can you imagine if you are the global governor or the world's president what are the five priority problems that you want to resolve in your first 12 months in office i'll give you time to think about it about a minute so of course i cannot hear your answer pero at this moment foreign lima i this is very hypothetical because in iba governance so at this lesson global governance first global governance so it's it's it's it's a [Music] trend it's a current uh interest of people so why not uh make a powerpoint presentation so first let's define global governance global governance refers to the collective efforts to identify understand and address worldwide problems that go beyond the problem solving capacities of states collective meaning hindi isa kasamaka so collective efforts to identify understand and address worldwide problems that go beyond the problem solving capacities of states they but inify nothing states last time so these are problems approach because one country alone cannot do it because the problem itself is borderless it trans its uh transcends beyond borders another definition of global governance is that it's the capacity of uh within the international system at any given moment to provide government like services and public goods in the absence of world government it is a combination of informal and formal ideas values rules norms procedures practices policies and organizations that help all actors states international organizations non-government organizations or ngos to identify understand and address the transboundary problems so capacity interstate system the international system world will animation president of the world pero with with the global governance to set out policies to sign treatise so basically that's the idea of global governance next the role of nation state in globalization alexa role of nation state because nation state among estado amangabansa at my sovereign power just to remind as a recap pagmai sovereign power the authority of the state to govern itself meron kang's healing authority makes to implement laws and programs for your own territory so that's the role of the nation state so nation state's role in globalization is complex complicado since nation states are divided by physical and economic boundaries reduced barriers in international commerce and communication are considered their potential threats happening globalization so giving potential threats reduced barriers casino because of of reduced barriers because of globalization young independence banangisan bansa in terms of policies i hindina independent akanelan foreign policy sovereignty of individual nations is not abolished by expanded trade among countries instead globalization is a force that changed the way nation states deal with one another particularly in the area of international commerce last time and um the globalization is a big force alumni setting international com commerce policies isolated states are forced to engage to one another while nation states domestic role is unchanged behind pakistan roles of some states were diminished while others have exalted roles to interactions of various economic balances because of interactions the complex because of economic imbalances the bombay economic elite my superpower discussed nothing and previously so because of that uh rules on how they interact global governance afflicting the world today which are increasingly transnational transboundary in nature those that cannot be solved at the national level or state to state negotiations you have no choice but to interact with other nations just to ensure that these will be resolved what is this poverty environmental pollution economic crisis organist organized crime and terrorism pandemics climate change individual problems can affect all nations and no nation states can resolve this thing alone uh how about poverty in united states yes even countries such as united states experience poverty rate environmental pollution philippines definitely indonesia yes environmental pollution in japan yes economic crisis europe yes philippines yes asia um at this point the the the the economy is hurting because of this uh fifth problem nandito pandemics and pandemics because of globalization highlight title and millions of people have been affected through local governance climate change it's very timely it's one of the biggest issues of our time of this generation and um generation but the next generations will definitely suffer your children your grandchildren and the world becomes warmer and warmer and what will happen later on we'll discuss about sustainability towards the end of the semester and needless to say decision-making processes in globalization is complex as it takes place in various levels such as subnational national and global which lead to the growth of multi-layered system of governance anxina sabilandito is that decision making process and um [Music] but don't worry i will provide also this powerpoint presentation so on global governance shifted from traditional territorial sovereign state or the nation state to a more loose structures warranting international cooperation movement and response in response several non-state bodies came about including the united nations with the ultimate goal of international action [Music] point [Music] how about vietnam war so and and in the cold war so we need to talk we need to talk to uh flesh out differences and make sure nah moving forward so that's when non-state bodies came about is that international action cooperation move forward into a better world one important example of non-state actor playing a vital role in the world's affairs is the united nations the introduction at ireland you and last time remember but this is about the governance highlighting united nations u.n is designed to make enforcement of international law security human rights economic development and social progress easier for countries around the world enforcement of international law um international law [Music] so west philippine sea or south china sea united nations convention on the laws of the seas or the u.n unclose uh the tribunal unclaimed china we're talking about the international logo so through international conventions like the un clause i philippines or other countries and china to to build artificial islands sometimes when i do google maps artificial islands in china look at that thing how how these structures are being built in in our own territories so um issues enforcement of international laws international obligations such as the u.n convention on the laws of the seas so security human rights economic development and social progress easier for countries around the world so there are different uh agreements casual duane conventions marriage for disaster risk reduction marriage for human rights man for social progress development how to combat poverty how to achieve uh women empowerment in workplaces so unveiling roles and functions of the united nations um as an international intergovernment as an intergovernmental organization the united nations is tasked to promote international cooperation and to create and maintain international order it is the largest most familiar most internationally represented and most powerful intern inter-governmental organization in the world inter-government international enter between and among governments because the membership of the u.n is basically different countries also the bameron the philippine ambassador to the united nations [Music] so there are four main purpose of the un charter first is maintaining worldwide peace and security number two is developing relations among nations number three is fostering cooperation between nations in in order to solve economic social cultural or humanitarian international problems and four providing a forum for bringing countries together to meet the un's purposes and goals because it aims to really make the world a better place to live in for the current generation and the future generations peace and security without peace and security do you think your businesses will prosper do you think international travel can prosper cruises how about safety these are the four main purpose of the u based of the un based on its charter so ang yuen aims to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war to affirm faith in fundamental human rights to establish conditions under which justice and respect for obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained and to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom it's not not necessarily what i want you is to understand the purpose you ends global governance question my world govern my world government battalion after discussing this so divine un it aims to to to be the facilitator for the different global discussions so um uh today that from the the state i not decision making it a very complex through dials globalization [Music] so going back again to my question midterm imagine you are the global governor or the world's president in in a situation named world government alimbawa what are the five priority problems that you would want to resolve in your first 12 months in office so after watching this lecture i want you to contemplate beyond yourself global issues and i am inclined to it moving forward all right thank you very much and that's global governance
