Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) is a nuclear deterrence strategy where two opposing powers maintain sufficient nuclear arsenals to ensure that any nuclear attack would result in the attacker's own complete annihilation, thereby preventing either side from initiating nuclear warfare; this doctrine relies on maintaining a nuclear triad (ground-based ICBMs, nuclear bombers, and submarine-launched ballistic missiles) to ensure that no matter how devastating a first strike might be, enough retaliatory capability would survive to guarantee mutual destruction, which has prevented nuclear war between major powers for nearly eight decades since the invention of the atomic bomb.
