This video explains three major sociological theories of aging: (1) Disengagement theory (Cumming & Henry, 1961) proposes that aging involves gradual withdrawal from society as individuals prepare for death and society transitions responsibility to younger generations; (2) Activity theory (Havighurst, 1961) argues that successful aging requires maintaining social activities and roles to achieve life satisfaction and self-esteem; (3) Continuity theory suggests that elderly individuals maintain consistent behaviors, relationships, and personalities by preserving internal and external structures from their past, with optimal continuity helping them adapt to aging changes. The video also discusses adjustment processes including health, social, and retirement transitions, noting that the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted elderly adjustment by accelerating disengagement and limiting physical activity.
Sociological Theories of Aging: Disengagement, Activity, Continuity
Added:hello and good day everyone today we are going to present about the theories of aging from social theories so we know that aging is a worldwide phenomenon that have become an impetus for the development of society the aim of social gerontology is to improve the quality of life of the elderly in social and psychological spirits sociological theories focus on the role and the social habit of individuals in a society and explain the changes in social relationships that occur in late adulthood we can take examples such as changing rules relationships status and etc this video consists of three major theories in social which are disengagement theory activity theory and continuity theory we will also explain about the adjustment in aging now let's move on to the first theory so what is disengagement theory this theory characterized by gradual disengagement or withdrawal of an individual from society and relationship this theory was formulated by cami and henry in a book growing old in 1961 they stated that aging is an inevitable military withdrawal or disengagement resulting in decreased interaction between the aging person and others in social system where he or she belongs to do withdrawal from society can be from different perspective in social perspective the individual have decree social interaction the individual also disengage from friends but focus more on their family members in psychological perspective they have decreased interest and motivation and it is the most common one while for physical perspective the individual is disengaged from society because of the reduced level of activity and productivity the second one is because of body frailty and the last one is decreased sensory function such as visual equity and hearing the separation is designed by both society and other adults and it serves to maintain social equilibrium this is because older adults are freed from social responsibilities and have more time to focus on themselves other than that the transition of responsibility from old to young that ensure a continuously functioning society without interruption that can cause by loss members as 18 percent eventually dead calming and henry also provided 9 postulates or reason for the process of disengagement the first one everyone expects that and people start to lose ties to others in society the second one less interaction creates freedom for elderly and they do not have to take rules anymore the third men and women experience disengagement in different ways next ego changes occur often as their individual ageing a person disengage from society because they do not want their image damage because of the losing knowledge and skill the fifth one complete disengagement occur when both the individual and society are ready if either is ready the engagement will continue next one is disengagement people most likely to adopt new roles as they do not suffer identity crisis and become demoralized postulate 7 readiness of individual and society permission where the individual have short periods of time to live and society allows them to disengage next remaining relationships are changing because of the less interaction from main rules we can take example from hierarchies in family where the father are no longer the head of the family last but not least disengagement theory may vary between cultures from this theory an individual accomplish successful aging when they are abandoning their social activities and other relationship that tells the individual to involve since last year we are still facing the covid19 pandemic this pandemic has impacted many particularly the elderly are no exception conflict 19 causes the early disengagement in italy this is because during this pandemic the elderly have been labeled as vulnerable and high risk of getting coffee 19 compared to the younger workers other factor is the older adult have to adapt to a new work environment such as work from home and the use of technology this leads to disengagement because it is hard for them to catch up with current advanced gadget such as tablet and laptop and the use of multiple software like zoom or google me the highest rate of debt due to covet 19 among the elderly also triggered the older adults to start planning for their retirement and that's all for this engagement theory now let's move on to activity theory next one is activity theory which developed by robert j vickers in 1961 dvd theory emphasized on the ongoing social activity of elderly in their life his theory proposed that successful aging occur when elderlies they active and maintain social interactions activities done by the elderly can help them achieve life satisfaction the more activity older adults engage in the greater the life satisfaction next it helped them to replace previous roles due to their retirement or any other reason to remain actives thus it also can help them stay active and maintain social interaction lastly activities can help increase their self-esteem self-esteem may be defined as how much you appreciate and like yourself regardless of the circumstances ladies and gentlemen state two criticism on activity theory which are the first one is often limited due to physical capabilities finances and access to social resources second one is staying active for the elderly necessarily delays the onset of the negative effect of aging as they have no desire to engage in new activity that they never do an article by cunningham and also happened in 2020 which the title is why physical activity matters for all the adults in the time of pandemic according to this research paper during this pandemic it is a challenge for the older adult to maintain anti-physical lifestyle this is due to the normal knowledge in social distancing and self-isolation during this pandemic it is a challenge for the older adult to maintain the active physical after although adults tend to have functional limitations increase risk of all-cause mortality fractures and recurrent falls this causes the disruption to user routines restriction of movement and separation from work and family and friends this caused physical activity changed abruptly thus resulting in reduced social and physical contact with others now let's look at the net social educatory of aging which is continuity theory first of all what is continued theory continued theory is how people remain consistent in how they live their life manage their relationship and exhibit their personalities even though they experience changes in their physical mental and social status due to aging do you know this theory has two types which are internal and external continuity which make elderly tend to maintain their unique mentality behavior like they did in the past when they were younger so what is internal continuity internet continuity is individual in relation to remember in a structure such as effect their experiences dispositions which remains a person's inherent qualities of mind and character and preference internal continuity will provide individuals a way to make future decisions based on their internal foundation of the past next we go to external continuity which is defined as a remembered structure of physical and social environments rule relationships and activities of an individual the perceptions of external continuity result from being in familiar environments practicing familiar skills and interacting with familiar people this will provide support for maintaining a stable self-concept and lifestyles next let me tell you about the degree of continuity there are three degrees of continuity the first one is too little continuity which defines life as too unpredictable to the individual this degree explains that life of the individual will be inconsistent if they have too little continuity or low maintaining activities in their later life hence the individual life will be severe as he or she can cope or adapt with the conflict which can also lead to discontinued theme the next degree is optimum continuity which explains the continuity activities is suitable for their personal preference and social demands in their society and the individual also can cope with changes in their life the last degree of continuity is too much continuity in their life which makes the individual feel uncomfortable and frustrated as they can't feel satisfied with their love animal as they have always been in a right a red means a habit or pattern of behavior that has become dull and unproductive but it is hard to change however that is critique on discontinuity theory because this theory based upon a healthy wealthy and male oriented social model and doesn't adequately account for the implicit social constraints placed on women the chronically ill elderly and the role of social welfare programs in the leaves of impoverished and needy older adults so the conclusion of this continuity theory is in making adaptive choices middle age and older adults attempt to preserve and maintain existing internal and external structures and that they prefer to accomplish this objective by using continuity with applying familiar strategies in familiar arenas of life that is in middle and later life adults are drawn by the way of past experience to use continuity as a primary adaptive strategy for dealing with changes associated with normal edging after we know all about the tutorials then we need to know how they addedly adjust in aging so what is adjustment adjustment is the process involving movement and behavioral response by which an individual strives to cope with the adjustment in their life what kind of adjustment their elderly need to adjust in aging first is health adjustment we know that one of the threats to the elderly is prolonged illness due to their illness the idealist ability to engage with others deteriorate because they start to expect that there are opportunities to socialize are also likely to lessen when personal health declines or mobility becomes more difficult thus they will lose social ties to those around them second is social adjustment maintaining social relationships contribute to better physical health better sense of belonging increased self-worth and feelings of security it is also provide emotional and psychological benefits brookman and brazil 1983 state that as we age and our health decline we intentionally instant ourselves from some of our relationship retaining only the ones from which we can benefit and know we can maintain family and particularly spouses are the ones that italy would maintain their relationship with them next is adjustment to loss of spouse so why do the elderly adjust when they lose hospitals loss of sports may be due to death or divorce with two percent will exhibit higher levels of social participation compared with narrative percent because of simultaneously losing the multiple social rules that were tied to the marriage or disposed the most successful veto or widower would be the individual who is most effective in maintaining the lifestyle he or she developed earlier in the life the continuity to hurry suggest that readers and narrators will not necessarily differ in them in terms of social participation rather levels of social participation will determine current level of social participation lastly adjustment to retirement the minimum retirement age of an employee should be upon the employee reaching the age of 16 years retirement requires gradual psychological adjustment proper financial psychological and physical preparation will help the elderly adjust easily to retirement life a person is ready to disengage when they are aware of the short term remaining in their life and they no longer wish to fulfill their current social roles and society allow for disengagement in order to provide jobs for those coming of age to satisfy the social needs of a nuclear family and because of people die there are benefits to the retirement life that brings opportunity for increasing physical activity as the time previously spent for work can be spent on leisure time activities how do elderly maintain continuity after retirement continuity refers to heavy situation or condition that remain the same as we move from one life stage into another for the example is transition work to retirement degrading the percentage value of the retained elements the more helpful they are in a transition if a retiree has strong family ties the fact that these ties are still available in retirement makes them a very good source of continuity continuity also can be preserved to nine-world relationship including friends sports family members or significant others maintaining continuity include leisure activities hobbies and other activities retires practice in spare time outside of their work the more we active they created their satisfaction during adjustment in late life during the air of coffee 90 pentamine the elderly need to adapt their life according to the circumstance there is one of the study about the adjustment of daily activities to restriction and reported spread of the kovic 90 permit across europe results from the analysis suggests that all the people in all 27 countries that participate in the shared corona survey reduced their activities quite drastically from the onset of the pandemic until the summer of 2020. there are reduction in activity related to social relations such as visiting other families members or meeting more than 5 people outside of the household the frequency of working among their respondents also decline in most countries and majority of the older people in the analyzed european countries also reported a decline in shopping activity the fact that slightly more older people than younger people has reduced their activities can be explained by the fact that the early age group faced a higher risk of becoming severely ill if they are infected by the virus
