Pieter Bruegel the Elder's 1559 painting 'Netherlandish Proverbs' is an oil-on-oak masterpiece that contains over 100 hidden English proverbs and idioms, using a vivid, grotesque yet imaginative landscape to illustrate human folly and the dangers of sin; the painting features symbolic color coding (blue representing folly and sin, red denoting cheating and betrayal) and includes iconic idioms such as 'to bang one's head against a brick wall' (trying to achieve the impossible), 'to be a pillar biter' (religious hypocrite), and 'to tie a flexing beard to the face of Christ' (hiding sins under the guise of religion).
