Coral bleaching occurs when corals expel their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae due to elevated sea temperatures (as little as 1°C above normal), causing corals to starve and experience lasting physiological damage including reduced growth, impaired reproduction, and increased disease susceptibility; the fourth global coral bleaching event, beginning in early 2023, has affected at least 72 countries and territories across all major oceans, with 76.7% of global coral reefs experiencing bleaching-level heat stress, surpassing previous records from 1998-2017, and authorities in affected regions like Florida, Thailand, and the Maldives have implemented emergency measures to minimize additional damage to already-stressed coral ecosystems.
