A leitmotif is a recurring musical theme—such as a melody, chord sequence, or rhythm—that composers associate with specific characters, places, or ideas to create continuity and support narrative throughout a film or game; this technique allows composers to connect plot elements through music, as demonstrated by examples like the shark attack motif in Jaws, the chromatic witch motif in The Wizard of Oz, and the talking drum motif for T'challa in Black Panther.
What Is a Leitmotif in Film Music? Definition, Examples, Uses
Added:if you ever studied music in Primary School you might remember Sergey prakoviev's classic work Peter and the Wolf it's a children's story in which the orchestra narrates the plot using different instruments and themes to represent different characters the flutes is the bird the oboe is the duck so on and so forth it's a fantastic example of light Motif in action a light Motif is a recurring musical idea a Melody chord sequence Rhythm or a combination of these which is then associated with a particular character place or idea composers use them to create continuity throughout a film or to help support the narrative by connecting ideas throughout the plot through music light motifs and other types of themes are one of your main tools as a composer to build narrative throughout your score they can be really obvious or more subtle they can be specific Melodies sounds chords or motifs how you choose to introduce them develop them and deploy them will have a huge impact on how your audience reacts to key moments in the plot there are tons of fantastic and well-known light motifs that you're likely to recognize from famous films [Music] the repeated E and F in the low register and John Williams's soundtrack for Jaws it shows up whenever a shark attack is hinted at or underway The Wizard of Oz the wicked witch is always represented by a very recognizable and fast-paced chromatic motif spot [Music] in this case the composers clearly use certain musical devices such as the tempo and the chromaticism to hint at the terror the witch was causing for Dorothy and her companions in the Dark Knight The Joker is represented by two Eerie metallic tones slowly ascends providing a deeply unsettling insight into the character's body philosophy one of the most obvious uses of light Motif is in video games especially in terms of places and settings just think of the original Mario Brothers game and the different versions of the music that you encountered when you were underwater [Music] Cloud world or in other locations the music in these cases is a key indicator of the scene but it can also indicate a different character State such as when you get a star and suddenly become invincible all of these are pretty over the top examples but they're also slightly more subtle uses you can employ the Shire theme from The Lord of the Rings plays in full at the beginning of the first movie when the audience is first introduced to the Shire but then it also comes back around again and again in slightly different alterations and on different instruments to evoke the wistful memory of comfort when the hobbits are no longer there foreign [Music] motifs the composer Ludwig goransen uses for the hero t'challa in the movie Black Panther is played on a talking drum in fact he had the instrument play a sound very reminiscent of t'challa on the drum short rhythmic pattern and pops up throughout the film and it can build to a crescendo when combined with an ensemble or other instruments in other words there really is no limit to what types of musical themes you can explore there are many projects you'll encounter in your career for which character-like motifs might not be suitable or maybe too obvious but knowing how to create a specific theme tied to your narrative will always be a critical storytelling skill [Music] thank you
