Today, parallel fifths are foundational in many global music traditions and form the backbone of modern rock and pop music through guitar 'power chords.' Rather than being an objective error, parallel fifths are treated in these contexts as a powerful stylistic tool.
How did they end up becoming one of the cardinal sins of voiceleading? The simple answer is not because parallel fifths are displeasing to the ear as is the case with dissonant intervals, but rather because the interval of the fifth is considered so consonant or perfect in nature that it sounds more like one note or voice instead of two separate ones. So thus two voices moving in fifths will sound like one voice and thus are not considered to be moving independent of one another. This reasoning applies to the similar rule of parallel octaves being forbidden which once again is because parallel octaves sound so consonant that they are no longer seen as independent voices and thus the polyhonic nature of the music is diminished as parallel fifths and octaves essentially sound like a doubling of one voice. Although I like to focus on classical music on this channel, I feel a great example of the phenomenon of parallel fifths sounding like one voice is audible in the opening rift of Black Sabbath's Iron Man. As an inattentive listener might assume this to be just one powerful voice when in fact it's a series of parallel fifths.
