The vagus nerve (10th cranial nerve) is the body's primary inflammatory control system and parasympathetic regulator, with 80% of its fibers being afferent (carrying sensory information from organs to the brain) and 15% being efferent (sending parasympathetic signals to organs). Dysfunction of this nerve is linked to chronic inflammatory conditions, gut disorders like SIBO, mental health issues including anxiety and depression, and conditions such as POTS. Vagus nerve function can be assessed through heart rate variability (HRV), which measures the milliseconds between heartbeats—greater variance indicates better autonomic balance. Optimization strategies include diaphragmatic breathing with longer exhales, choline supplementation, electrical stimulation of the cervical vagus nerve trunk, and addressing four categories of stressors: daily emotional stress, physical stress (injuries, sedentary lifestyle), biochemical stress (leaky gut, nutritional deficiencies), and psychological stress (trauma).
