Power can be measured by connecting two multimeters (one set to voltage and one to current) with a 30 ohm resistor in series, where voltage is measured across the resistor and current flows through the circuit; power is then calculated by multiplying voltage by current (P = V × I), with typical wind turbine outputs measured in milliwatts (e.g., 4V × 22mA = 8.8mW).
Measuring Power From a KidWind Turbine With Multimeters
Added:[Music] my name is Remy pangle I am with the center for the advancement sustainable energy at JMU and uh today I'm going to show you how to measure power uh using two multimeters and a resistor for those of you who don't have the um verer go direct sensor to measure power from your turbine or from a solar array either way so in order to do this what we need is to multimeters um you'll need a one of the 30 ohm resistors assuming that you're testing a wind turbine it's important to have that 30 Ohm resistor and then I am going to use five of these alligator clips in order to get everything connected if you have multimeters that already have Clips on the end you won't need as many alligator clips but I'd have a bunch of them on on hand as we're hooking this up so in order to do this I am using this diagram this was put out by kidwind I found it on the verer website but this diagram is going to show you exactly how to set this up um but this video will kind of walk you through it just in case you need some more help with that so the first thing that we're going to do is we're going to set one of these uh multimeters to direct voltage on the 20 scale just like you do when you're normally measuring voltage from your kidwind turbine the other one you're going to actually set to direct amperage or current um so that we can measure both current and voltage because current and voltage together are going to give us a power measurement which is just like what the go direct sensor is doing for you once you have those set now we have to set up the circuit so the important thing to remember is that when you are measuring voltage you need to measure voltage across the circuit but when you're measuring current you need to measure current within the flow of the circuit so that's why this gets a little complicated so the first thing we're going to do is we're going to set this up to measure current voltage across the resistor doesn't matter what colors you're using in terms of these alligator clips they all work the same so I'm going to add alligator clips to the ends of my positive and my negative leads from my multimeter I'm going to attach one to either side of the resist so now once I hook the turbine into this whole system it's going to be measuring vol Vol across the resistor which is exactly what we want now to set up the current again we need to add alligator clips to the ends of each of the leads your negative lead for the multimeter that's measuring current is going to go on the same side that's measuring that um the positive side of your voltage multimeter is um at the resistor so you've got both of those there and then the other side of your current because it wants to be in the flow is actually going to attach to the positive lead from your turbine okay and then that just leaves one last piece and that means that the negative side of your voltage on that other side of your resistor is going to use that last alligator clip to connect to the negative lead from your turbine okay so we'll kind of trace this again we've got the voltage measurement here going across the resistor and the current is in the flow of the positive through the resistor to the negative of your turbine okay so once you have all that set up if you give your turbine a Twist you're going to start seeing some numbers and so I'm going to grab some numbers from this so that we can just go through real quickly how to calculate power so we're getting about4 volts and about 22 milliamps so if we come in here and we say Point what did i say4 volts and um 22 milliamps so that's important that it's set to milliamps because um that is important when we go to calculate our power so if you do4 * 22 you're going to get is that 8.8 I'm doing this in my head don't count me on this 8.8 Milli Watts okay if you want to calculate fullon watts you'd have to convert this to. 22 amps so then that would be a very small amount of Watts 08 Watts so it's not a lot of electricity that we get out of these uh kidwind turbines um but just like the energy sensor um you're mostly going to see this mwatts and so um 8.8 mwatts is in the right range for what you should be seeing from your turbine if you have any other questions about how to set up this configuration to be able to measure power without an energy sensor um feel free to give us an email anytime at case jmu.edu thank you
