The Spanish Phrygian scale is a seven-note scale derived from the Phrygian mode but with an added major third, creating two melodic alternatives (flat 3 and natural 3) that produce dark, energetic sounds with exotic Arabic or Turkic qualities; unlike traditional Phrygian which centers on a dominant chord, Spanish Phrygian treats the major tonic triad as the central harmonic center, featuring harmonic possibilities including the tonic triad, flat 2 major chord, subdominant minor chord, flat 7 minor chord, and various diminished and augmented chords that can be used for melodic decoration and harmonic tension.
